YOU ARE THE MAN!!!
And bless you, now you are proving it!!!
Way to go! Just having your running shoes on gets you in that mindset - so what do you do? You find a track!!! Breaks me up, but I'm not laughing AT you, I'm laughing WITH you because I am starting to hear the Joy that is You back in your voice. And Victory on- INR improvement, Blood pressure changes with exercise, Heart rate closer to what feels like home, and Dreams, among other things. But the big one is -You are getting your great Tony attitude back! What makes the man is not the things that are seen, a man's worth comes from what is inside of him - heart, mind, and soul! Sir, you are a winner and you always will be! The MAN upstairs made you that way, and He is always right. Even if you forget just a bit, He is knowing and nudging you to be everything you are meant to be. We fall down, but we get up! A failure is not someone who falls down, a failure is someone who falls down and doesn't get back up. That is not you, Tony, that is not the Tony we know and Love. That's all gone now. I know you can feel it! Loved that helicopter coming for you!
Look out- like the movie said, He's Back!!
God bless you, Tony. You make me smile inside, and for that I thank you!!!

Good morning Anthony. Hope you had a better night's sleep and that today is not a day where you will be "curling your toes" as you shared in your blog to me! Right now I think the anticipatory anxiety associated with what it will feel like after the surgery go replaced by the vision of waking up after surgery! I will be happy just to get to that place!!!!
As you miss your running it is the same for me with swimming but I have been in no way as active as you appear to be!
This means you are so close to being on the way back to your next race and I am months away from feeling the pull of the water as I glide back from one lap and in to another. How I miss the strength of those simple moves as you miss filling your lungs with beautiful breaths of oxygen and the wind in your face! We will all get that fresh start which will for you be sooner than later!
And the way we feel/felt prior to surgery will be a thing of the past.
Again buddy, patience! Have a great day.

I also use to swim a lot so I know exactly what you are talking about. I was okay at it and felt that I would not drown in open water which is much better than my memories of growing up at the local pool. I have decided to make the best of all circumstances that come my way. They is always someone round the corner that have it much worst off than me.
If for whatever reason I am prevented from running again then I will find some other useful way to channel my positive and must say somewhat inspirational energy. All good things take time and I now have plenty of it with this brand new mechanical valve.
Thanks for your inspirational words of wisdom.

Thanks for passing on Ed's thoughts and prayers. Looks like you are having another very successful OBAP camp. I do look forward to us flying together after I get my medical back. The only hitch is that on the layover we must go for a short jog. So you probably have some training to do. Keep up the good work.
I appreciate your kind words about me being an inspiration. I have my late mother to thank for that attribute. I look as myself as a teacher to the world, like she was, and hope I can continue until my last day on earth like she did.

Ginger (in the Land of Oz) (thanks Terrie!) posted a note for Anthony that says:
Anthony,
THANK YOU FOR THIS POST!!! Your good news is GREAT! and you not so good news is, not so good but certainly not BAD!!!
You may remember that I have a brain injury and it acts up from time to time. (That is the nicest way I can put it.) But Anthony, I cannot get out of my bed and have any chance of standing up without immediately hitting the floor if I don't wait at least 30 minutes after I have taken my morning meds first. Try that with a full bladder! It used to be one hour!
I am on so many meds - almost none of them for the FDA approved use - that I spend an entire afternoon and sometimes well through the evening setting them up for the week to come. And I take them (well, some of them) four times a day.
The one I absolutely HAVE to take 4 times a day has another drug in the same class that can be taken only twice a day. Yes, they tried that first, right after the injury. It was supposed to slow down the terrible vertigo that was coming from inside my brain and maybe even give me a chance to relax and sleep. Instead, I had what they call a paradoxical reaction. In me, the drug did completely different things. I got agitated, irritable, shaky, and thought I would climb the walls. And this was one small dose.
My doctor called to see how much it was helping. NOT! Uh oh, hmmmm...what to do. I think I have told you I have been a pharmacist since 1978. I said, there is one drug in that class that is eliminated unchanged in the urine, doesn't break down into other things so there are 3 things now active that my brain apparently does not like. I told her the name of the drug.
She said, But you would have to take that four times a day!!! I said, If it works and helps this sensation of motion and the wall not connecting with the ceiling go lessen or go away and the nausea and vomiting that come after it, I would GLADLY take it 4 times a day. She reminded me it would probably be for a long time. Well Anthony, it's been over 25 years, but at least there are times when looking at me people probably think I am "normal".
I cannot walk a straight line even with it. (My friends say, if a cop pulls you over, say BREATHALYZER!) It really is funny, although it wasn't at the start.
And I have an identical twin who take one tablet for her thyroid once a day! I do too, but also much more!
What I am trying to say is, this is a small setback in the big picture. If you didn't want to go home, then they would be examining your head like they did mine!
Your not so good news is actually good because something can be done about it! If you were covered with hives from the Coumadin (warfarin), then you would have a huge problem. But this is just a matter of patience and time.
You are in good hands. They know what they are doing and they kept you because they care, just like we do. We don't want you going home before your INR is in the right range because we love you too much. We do NOT want you to have a stroke in the first week you are home. Do you see what I am saying?
The docs know the problem (Victory #1), they know how to take care of it (Victory #2), and they will know when you can safely leave the hospital (Victory #3).
You spoke earlier about being a patient patient. The time is now. I know people who have not seen a heart rate as low as 70 for years and never will! But once you get back in your running shoes, that 70 will go down! How jealous they would all be!
And you are not in a medium stress or low stress environment -- you're in a hospital, and no matter how much you try, you will feel stress there. Makes your heart rate go ---- Yes, up!
God bless you, Anthony, when I started to read your post, I was really worried that the warfarin was not working. But NO, they just have to get it so it is making the INR get to the right level. With their experience, that is a piece of cake! (Make mine double chocolate!)
You will look back on this day and shake your head, but I know-- you will have a smirk on your face! It's another necessary step. It's not at all like they have to rush you back to the OR.
So allow yourself to be washed over with peace. Think of how you feel after running with all those endorphins flowing through you. Know that we are all praying you home, but not before it is the right time with the right INR! Because we love you too much. You are part of our family and we want the very best for you! And so do all of those people taking care of you.
That's the Truth -- no if, ands, goods, or bads. Take each day as they come. Rejoice that your heart is doing so well. Be glad you are so far beyond so many of us who do not even know yet when our surgery will be.
YOU ARE THE MAN!! We Love you, and Don't You Forget It!
With great hugs and prayers and more,

All that you had to say is so true. I am in the middle of the forest and you are helping me to see the trees. How beautiful they are and the mere fact that I can see them at all. I am a passionate goal setter and in a medical situation it is not the best personality trait to have.
When the Chaplain stopped by before surgery she asked me what I would like to pry for and I suggest patients since I knew that it was not my strong suit. I had no fear of failure on the part of the great team here and diffidently you lack of confidence in my level of determination. As you can read in my words that I still have work to do on the patients factor.
The other thing you comment brought to mind for me is that I underestimated how the lack of endorphins was going to effect me. For the past 15 years I was always a couple of days getting that natural hight. To enjoy the outside world as it rotates by under my feet and the fresh air filling my lungs. There to I come back to patients as I wait for my first experience to once again enjoy that again.
I am so fortunate to be able to think of those past days and to one day dream of them filling me up in the future. I wish there was something that could ease what you are going thru but I am clearly out of my element. For me conversations with others always comes back to exercise. I can talk about it for hours and how it has effected my life what in your case not sure if it is a viable option. I have seen people of varied disabilities out on the road or during races. They are the ones that get to tie up my running shoes each day. If they can do it then what is my excuse.
Thanks again for your comment.

In the hospital I seem to spend a lot more time and my body is just not use to it. I will continue to adjust to the ever changing terrain. There are a number of experience that will stay with you forever. You can read about them but until it happens to you it will only be something to anticipate.
I really enjoy the different ways they tell you something is going to hurt. There must be hundreds of term they all like to use. I can assure you if they say simply this is going to hurt be prepared because it will curl you toes.

I had numerous reasons to go with the mechanical valve. Here they are in no particular order.
My Surgeon said that if he was me he would go with mechanical and only listed taking a blood thinner as a down side.
I wanted something that would keep up with my very active lifestyle. I was running 20-30 miles a week with a dozen races of different lengths each year with 5 of them being a marathon.
There was a concern that maybe a MRSA skin infection might have caused the valve problem so did not want to put in another one that might end up with the same problem.
Do not want to do this ever again. Top end I would be in my mid 70's and could not imagine doing this at that age. They say by then replacement thru the groin will be common but still you will have major surgery, the risks and the long hospital day.
The steady decline over the last 2 years is an experience I do not want to relive. I always was on edge like something was going to happen prior to actual surgery and that took a toll on my mental health.
I had never stayed over night in a hospital before and even though I had been there many times for other family members I understand the risk of infection is high and would rather not subject my body to that risk.
Back to the blood thinner issue I did a lot of reading of others experience and they all made it sound like no big deal. I have no problem doing what is necessary to take care of my health so blood tests and taking one pill once a day did not seem to be a problem for me.
My plan is after 90 days I will get a home test kit and do it myself or have a visiting nurse do it when I am 100.
Hope this helps.
Wish you much success with your up coming surgery and if you don't sleep on your back I would suggest to start learning how to. It is a required skill and a requirement with this type of surgery.

One more reason came to mind while i was walking the halls here at CC. Probably the most important to me and it has to do with my attitude towards life.
I kept hearing that at my age of almost 59 that I could go either way.
If i was a couple of years older and not in such good shape they would have suggested a pig valvle. If i was younger and in in good shape they would have suggested a mechanical valve.
The way i look at it I would rather think of myself as younger than my actual age and in very good shape so it was a mechanical valve for me. I plan on being on this earth for a long time.

Went back to my cardiologist and my regular doctor and they both suggested the Cleveland Clinic. Did there on line second opinion option and got a call back fro their cardiologist who suggested I come in for more tests. He felt that surgery was in order and suggested the surgeon I used.
At the Cleveland Clinic I felt that this was the place for me and after asking around I understand hospitals with their problem cases send them here.

Ginger ( in the Land of Oz) posted a note for Anthony that says:
It's late and you are probably asleep, so I am probably too late tonight, but I have a suggestion that may help you sleep on your back.
I used to sleep as you describe. Then I had a different surgery and had to sleep on my back. Here is what helped me:
Elevate your knees with pillows or what nursing suggests. It keeps your back flat and helps to give resistance if you try to roll. In addition, since your back is flatter on the bed, your back will feel better,so you are more likely to stay there.
Next, if you need extra pillows ask, but put at least one good sized pillow flush against each side. Just to get used to them, for a few days you might ask then nurses to tuck then in with a sheet that goes across your chest. They will keep you from rolling to one side or the other. But do not tuck in your arms or ...not a good idea. after a little bit you won't be rolling because your back ill be happier and you will get in the habit. I learned this after surgery on both sides for breast cancer. And they will want to check your chest just like they did mine, although I bet I had a lot more bandages and stitches on the outside than you did! If they say no to the sheet, just prop the pillows against each side. They will still remind you not to roll. It has been two years for me now and I still sleep on my back with knees propped up because my back feels a lot better. The side pillows are just plopped around on the bed! Now I am in the waiting zone to find out when my aortic valve replacement surgery will be. Glad I did not know how soon this would be two years ago. One day at a time, one step at a time!
Hope you are dropping back off well tonight and tomorrow is even better.

Great news that your surgery went well and that you were happy with the results of your AVR. Continued uphill progress.
I hope when you feel up to it and have time you will add posts about your recovery so that we can learn from your experience.
Of all the journals I have read it appears you have taken a positive stand from beginning thru your surgery which has been a factor in your success, don't you agree? I am going to focus on the positive as I get closer to my own AVR in Aug.
Again-Very happy for you and get well soon.

Anthony Copeland-Parker I did get your message.
Here is the Tale below.
Moving forward I will try my best to starve the evil wolf and feed the good wolf.
Sometimes that is easier said than done.

An Old Cherokee Tale of Two Wolves
One evening an old Cherokee Indian told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, ‘My son, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all.One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.
The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.’
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: ‘Which wolf wins?’
The old Cherokee simply replied, ‘The one you feed.’
This is such a lovely story: so simple and yet so true. I think each and every one of us has these two wolves running around inside us. The Evil wolf or the Good Wolf is fed daily by the choices we make with our thoughts. What you think about and dwell upon will in a sense appear in your life and influence your behavior.
We have a choice, feed the Good Wolf and it will show up in our character, habits and behavior positively. Or feed the Evil Wolf and our whole world will turn negative: like poison, this will slowly eat away at our soul.

Since reading your latest post about making a lot of dust on my final slide, I have begun to exercise. I thank you, not only for inspiring me to take better care of myself, but also for the countless examples you have given me on great leadership.
Looking forward to your returm.

That is why there is chocolate and vanilla. Running is my passion and I am sure you have something that you are also passionate about. Some might say that I have taken running to extreme and sometimes I even joke that all my running blew my valve out.
I am glad to know that what I have written so far has made you think and you are working on a exercise routine that fits your lifestyle. I went on a few runs with my daughter when I went to visit her in Brazil and she now running again. It does bring me joy to know that in some little way I have inspired someone somehow.
To inspire is why I feel that I am on this earth in the first place. Thanks for your kind note and look forward to seeing you and all the folks in MIA real soon.
