Since completing the first, successful open-heart bypass surgery in 1955, Mayo Clinic has been a driving force in the medical advances within cardiac care.

Specific to diseases of the aortic, mitral, tricuspid and pulmonary valves, the Mayo Clinic team has conducted ground-breaking research and developed new therapies to enhance the safety, quality and long-term outcomes of heart valve procedures.

Mayo Clinic performs more than 2,000 heart valve surgeries each year at locations in Minnesota, Florida and Arizona. For many of its patients, Mayo Clinic offers advanced treatment options including minimally-invasive approaches that are designed to reduce the incision size, shorten hospital stays and accelerate recovery.

For select patients, Mayo Clinic has extensive experience in new transcatheter approaches for valve repair and valve replacement. For example, Mayo Clinic offers select patients transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) for aortic stenosis and transcatheter mitral valve repair (TMVr). Both TAVR and TMVr do not require an incision to the patient’s chest or ribs and the patient does not need to be on the heart-lung machine during these procedures.

To further advance heart valve therapy, Mayo Clinic participates in several heart valve clinical trials to evaluate the safety-and-efficacy of new techniques and medical devices.
