Indiana University Health

Our structural heart program is built around a multidisciplinary valve clinic designed to save you time and eliminate the back-and-forth of coordinating multiple specialists. At a single appointment, you'll meet with both an interventional cardiologist and a cardiovascular surgeon, and any testing you need can typically be completed the same day. That means you leave with a clear, coordinated treatment plan developed jointly by the physicians who will care for you — not weeks of separate visits and waiting for results.

Indiana University Health Nurse Practitioner

We offer a full range of minimally invasive transcatheter therapies for valve disease, including treatment of the aortic, mitral, tricuspid, and pulmonary valves. These catheter-based procedures avoid open-heart surgery for many patients, often resulting in shorter hospital stays and faster recovery. Our team also has the expertise and experience to take on some of the most complex structural heart cases in Indiana, including patients who have been told elsewhere that their options are limited.

Minimally-Invasive Cardiac Surgery Experts

Not every valve patient needs a full sternotomy. Our program offers minimally invasive cardiac surgery under the direction of Dr. Marc Gerdisch, Director of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery, who brings many years of experience in valve surgery performed through smaller, less disruptive approaches. His practice focuses on minimally invasive heart valve repair and replacement, surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation, multi-valve redo operations, and complex aortic root reconstruction — including cases that other centers consider too involved for anything but conventional open surgery.

Indiana University Cardiac Surgery Operating Room

What sets this approach apart is what happens after the operation. Dr. Gerdisch pairs minimally invasive techniques with advanced sternal closure methods, which support faster, safer mobilization in the days following surgery. Patients get up sooner, recover more comfortably, and return to their lives more quickly — and that holds true even for those with the most complex conditions. For patients who have been told open-heart surgery is their only option; a second opinion here may reveal a less invasive path.
