I just received a great question from Evelyn about the Ross Procedure for aortic valve disease patients.<\/p>\n

She writes, “Adam – The stenosis in my aortic valve<\/a> is getting worse and I’m starting to feel the symptoms. My valve has been upgraded to severe stenosis from moderate status and it looks like surgery is in my future. I’m investigating my options and considering the Ross Procedure. By chance, do you know how many Ross Procedures are performed each year? Thanks, Evelyn”<\/p>\n

Evelyn raises a great question. In fact, when I first learned of the Ross Procedure<\/a>, as an alternative to traditional approaches, I thought to myself, “Sound goods. But, what is the surgical success rate of the Ross Procedure? And, how many of those procedures have been done?”<\/p>\n

In talking with Dr. Vaughn Starnes (my surgeon)<\/a>, Dr. Donald Ross (the inventor of the procedure)<\/a> and doing my own research, I learned that the Ross Procedure is definitely not performed as frequently as bioprosthetic and mechanical valve replacements. In fact, some surgeons do not favor the procedure as it requires a double valve replacement – the pulmonary valve is replaced with a homograft.<\/p>\n

However, the more I learned about the Ross Procedure, its patient advantages, the surgical outcomes of the Ross Procedure and Dr. Starnes’ familiarity with the procedure (he has performed over 650 Ross Procedures), this option made sense for me. Nearly 20 years later… I’m doing great. I have had no re-operations and no re-interventions. Plus, I’m not taking any medications including Coumadin. That said, I feel great and I am Scuba diving regularly with my son<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now, specific to Evelyn’s question…<\/p>\n

I did some digging on the topic and learned very little as to the question, “How many Ross Procedures occur annually?”<\/p>\n

However, I recently interviewed Dr. Ismail El-Hamamsy<\/a> about the latest research specific to durability of the Ross Procedure. During that interview, Dr. El-Hamamsy shared actual data about the annual Ross Procedures performed in the United States. As you can see below, given the latest and favorable data about the Ross Procedure, there has been an 8X increase in Ross Procedures performed in the United States.<\/p>\n

As you can see above, there were 531 Ross Procedure performed in 2023, which is a significant increase from just 63 Ross Procedures performed in 2017.<\/p>\n

Given the tremendous increase in patient interest specific to the Ross Procedure, I recently launched a new Ross Procedure Patient Education Center at this link<\/a> to help patients get educated about this advanced form of aortic valve replacement.<\/p>\n
