If you haven’t noticed, heart valve disease has been in the news lately as many celebrities are sharing their valvular defects publicly.<\/p>\n

In the past, we had learned that Barbara Bush had aortic valve replacement. Then, we heard that Robin Williams had aortic valve replacement with a bovine valve and a mitral repair.\u00a0 Aaron Boone, a professional baseball player and manager of the New York Yankees had aortic valve repair.\u00a0 Then, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mick Jagger. And, U2’s lead-singer, Bono.<\/p>\n

We also learned that actress Jenny Garth was diagnosed with a leaky heart valve.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI have a leaky valve,\u201d she explained. \u201cAnd it\u2019s a common thing. A lot of people have it, They don\u2019t know they have it\u2026 [it] leaks blood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jenny Garth’s condition is commonly referred to as valvular regurgitation<\/a> in the medical community and can effect each of the four heart valves. Certain forms of regurgitation, including mitral regurgitation, impact approximately 2% of the population. Mitral valve prolapse is one of the leading causes of leaking heart valve.<\/p>\n

At the current time, Jenny Garth is asymptomatic<\/a> although the actress, most known for her role as Kelly Taylor on the wildly successful Beverly Hills 90210<\/em>, produced by Aaron Spelling. Jenny Garth was also one of the contestants on Dancing With The Stars in 2005: Season 5<\/em> in 2007.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been affected by heart disease practically my whole life,\u201d Garth recently told Access\u2019 Tony Potts at an American Heart Association\u2019s Go Red For Women BetterU Program event. \u201cMy father has struggled with heart disease since he was 50, and I lost him a year ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

Garth said at times she actually feels it happening. \u201cIt\u2019s your connection to your heart\u2026 your artery, the main artery that goes to your heart,\u201d she said. \u201cIt sort of flutters open and shut sort of a thing, so you\u2026 it\u2019s weird because sometimes when I\u2019m resting I can feel a little weird fluttering.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though she\u2019s able to currently lead a normal active life, she noted that surgery – heart valve replacement or heart valve repair – may be needed if symptoms arise.<\/p>\n
