{"id":6224,"date":"2011-06-13T10:12:30","date_gmt":"2011-06-13T15:12:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/?p=6224"},"modified":"2020-11-02T09:43:00","modified_gmt":"2020-11-02T14:43:00","slug":"portico-heart-valve-replacement-st-jude","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/2011\/06\/13\/portico-heart-valve-replacement-st-jude\/","title":{"rendered":"Technology Update: First Human Implant of Portico Transcatheter Aortic Heart Valve Replacement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the heels of the FDA approval for its Trifecta heart valve replacement, St. Jude Medical just announced that Dr. John Webb of St. Paul&#8217;s Hospital in Canada has completed the first human implant of the new <em>Portico<\/em> aortic valve replacement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/Images\/portico-heart-valve-replacement-aortic.jpg\" alt=\"Transcatheter Portico Aortic Heart Valve Replacement \" width=\"250\" height=\"307\" \/><br \/>\nPortico TAVR Valve<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Portico heart valve replacement falls into a &#8220;next generation&#8221; category of transcatheter devices that do not require the patient&#8217;s sternum or ribs to be broken during implant &#8211; via median sternotomy or thoracotomy. Instead, the Portico aortic valve replacement is implanted in the heart using a catheter inserted through the femoral artery or the left ventricle.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Similar to the Sapien (Edwards Lifesciences) and the CoreValve (Medtronic) devices, the Portico aortic valve replacement is currently intended to help over 400,000 &#8220;high risk&#8221; or &#8220;inoperable&#8221; patients who suffer from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/aortic-stenosis-valve-heart-narrowing.php\">severe aortic valve stenosis<\/a>. Aortic stenosis is a narrowing of the aortic valve which controls the flow of blood from the left ventricle to the aorta. As shown below, the Portico valve replacement is tricuspid &#8212; with each of its three leaflets made from pericardial (cow) tissue.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"\/Images\/catheter-portico-st-jude-valve-replacement.jpg\" alt=\"St. Jude Portico Aortic Valve Replacement Via Catheter - Top View\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/><br \/>\nPortico TAVR Valve<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is critical to note that the Portico heart valve replacement is not approved by the FDA in the United States. Furthermore, its clinical trials in Europe are not expected to begin until later this year. Still, St. Jude Medical and its team of clinical investigators are optimistic about this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/aortic-valve-replacement-surgery.php\">new aortic valve replacement<\/a>.
