{"id":34162,"date":"2021-11-24T15:40:50","date_gmt":"2021-11-24T20:40:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/?p=34162"},"modified":"2022-01-11T11:26:24","modified_gmt":"2022-01-11T16:26:24","slug":"alfred-gift-of-life-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/2021\/11\/24\/alfred-gift-of-life-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"On Thanksgiving, We Help Give Life to Baby Alfred!!!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Patients and Friends,<\/p>\n<p>On Thanksgiving, I am happy to share wonderful news with the HeartValveSurgery.com community!!!<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to your extraordinary support, we just sponsored the life-saving heart surgery of Baby Alfred, a 7-month-old boy from Lagos, Nigeria.\u00a0 Alfred was born with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/heartdefects\/tetralogyoffallot.html\">Tetralogy of Fallot<\/a>, a dangerous, congenital heart defect that affects blood flow through the heart valves.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/..\/Images\/alfred-gift-of-life-patient.jpg\" alt=\"Alfred - Gift of Life Patient from Nigeria\" width=\"600\" height=\"314\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-34177\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Baby Alfred&#8217;s Struggle<\/h2>\n<p>At just 3 weeks of age, Alfred\u2019s parents noticed that he was not growing like other babies, he was having trouble nursing, and he was constantly short of breath.  His parents also noticed that his lips would turn purple when he would cry.\u00a0 At 4 months of age, Alfred&#8217;s constant cries were inconsolable.  He was becoming very frail.<\/p>\n<p>Alfred&#8217;s parents took their son to a nearby hospital where the medical team diagnosed Alfred with a serious heart condition. He needed surgery as soon as possible. Since then, Alfred\u2019s parents did their best to raise money from friends, family and churches to pay for his medical care.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Alfred&#8217;s parents could not afford the surgery needed to save their son\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Gift of Life Readies to Help Alfred<\/h2>\n<p>Thanks to Rob Raylman, the CEO of Gift of Life International, we learned about Alfred&#8217;s situation.\u00a0 As you may know, I am a huge fan of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.giftoflifeinternational.org\/\">Gift of Life International<\/a>.\u00a0 This amazing, non-profit organization has helped more than 40,000 children &#8211; from 80 countries across 5 continents &#8211; receive treatment for heart disease.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a great video to help you learn about Gift of Life International.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gKvZAKA3mYg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Our Community Gets Involved!<\/h2>\n<p>After learning about Alfred&#8217;s urgent need for heart surgery, Gift of Life was ready to help.<\/p>\n<p>However, Gift of Life needed a co-sponsor for Alfred&#8217;s operation.<\/p>\n<p>On Thanksgiving&#8230; Thanks to the extraordinary people within the HeartValveSurgery.com community, I am happy to share that we just sponsored Alfred&#8217;s lifesaving cardiac surgery.\u00a0 His surgery is now being planned for January or February.<\/p>\n<p>As Rob Raylman, the CEO of Gift of Life, shared with me, &#8220;With COVID-19, we are working in difficult times.\u00a0 Timing these procedures can be challenging given all the logistics required to facilitate Alfred\u2019s travel and cardiac procedure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, we will keep you updated as Alfred prepares for his operation.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>&#8220;Thank You!&#8221; on Thanksgiving<\/h2>\n<p>Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. <\/p>\n<p>I love everything about it &#8211; being with family, spending time with friends, the smells of food cooking, and the chill in the air.
