{"id":30278,"date":"2019-08-06T15:58:03","date_gmt":"2019-08-06T20:58:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/?p=30278"},"modified":"2019-08-07T13:45:17","modified_gmt":"2019-08-07T18:45:17","slug":"patient-experience-edwards-lifesciences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/2019\/08\/06\/patient-experience-edwards-lifesciences\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Did 50 Patients Get a Standing Ovation at &#8220;Patient Experience 2019&#8221; at Edwards Lifesciences?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Something special recently happened!\u00a0 More than 50 patients and their care partners traveled to Edwards Lifesciences, a leading heart valve manufacturer in Irvine, California, to meet each other, to share their stories and drive helpful insights for Edwards, and to inspire action within our community \u2013 the heart valve patient community.<\/p>\n<p>The event, which was previously called \u201cPatient Day\u201d, is now called\u2026 \u201cThe Patient Experience&#8221;.\u00a0 Luckily, Edwards hired us to film the wonderful moments of this unique event that included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Meet-and-greets with the heart valve assembly teams<\/li>\n<li>A look at Edwards\u2019 60+ years of pioneering work in structural heart disease and critical care technology<\/li>\n<li>Panel and group discussions<\/li>\n<li>A campus and manufacturing tour including Edwards\u2019 Heart Valve Museum<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One of my favorite parts of the day was watching patients meet the Edwards employees who actually hand-crafted their individual heart valves.<\/p>\n<p>Ready to see what happened at Patient Experience 2019? I was just sitting there silently crying, trying to wrap my head around it.<\/p>\n<p>Gary Truhn:\u00a0 I felt alone &#8212; not knowing what the outcome was going to be.<\/p>\n<p>Susan Truhn:\u00a0 There was no way out. It kind of felt like we weren\u2019t going to be rescued. We would just continue to go out with the tide.<\/p>\n<p>Marvin Keyser:\u00a0 I didn\u2019t expect it, and I became very nervous and, of course, anxiety took over.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30290\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/..\/Images\/Mike-Mussallem-Patient-Experience.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"323\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mike Mussallem:\u00a0 At the center of our culture is helping patients. There\u2019s something special when you actually dialog with a patient that\u2019s gone through the experience &#8211; to see in their eyes what it was like. It\u2019s so powerful. It inspires us. It reminds us. It stays with us. We share with our co-workers that patient experience. It brings to life everything that we\u2019re about.<\/p>\n<p>Gary Truhn:\u00a0 When I saw it, I didn\u2019t believe it. A thousand stitches!<\/p>\n<p>Edwards Employee: Can I touch your heart?<\/p>\n<p>Gary Truhn: Yes!<\/p>\n<p>Susan Truhn: Their heart and soul went into this work. You guys are part of my life, and I\u2019m part of their life.<\/p>\n<p>Gary Truhn: Instant family.<\/p>\n<p>Susan Truhn: It\u2019s put everything into perspective. I wish we had had this experience earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Cindi Waldrop: The Patient Experience is completely empowering. I know I\u2019ve got an entire community behind me, and that\u2019s what it\u2019s all about. I now have a new community.
