Dr. Fedak Is Ted Talking!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m a big fan of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/surgeons\/dr-Paul-Fedak-Canada-Calgary.php\">Dr. Paul Fedak<\/a> from Calgary.<\/p>\n<p>If you have not heard that name before&#8230; Dr. Fedak is a well-respected surgeon, an inventor, a big-time researcher of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/bicuspid-aortic-valve-symptoms.php\">bicuspid aortic valves<\/a>, and an ongoing supporter of this community.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28384\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/..\/Images\/dr-paul-fedak.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"278\" \/>Dr. Paul Fedak<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Plus, Dr. Fedak is a super nice guy who often shares his personal feelings about his role as a heart surgeon and his passion for heart surgery.\u00a0 For example, you may have seen his video about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/2017\/12\/21\/history\/\">past, present and future of heart surgery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So&#8230; When I learned that Dr. Fedak was going to be featured on a Ted Talk, I grabbed a bag of pre-popped popcorn (no joke) and clicked the play button on the video below.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XTPp7LcH8TE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of my favorite quotes from the video.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Your health is a very special gift.\u00a0 We like to think it&#8217;s our default setting but it&#8217;s not.\u00a0 You see death is our default setting.\u00a0 Health should not be an expectation you will not always be healthy.\u00a0 But the good news is we have innovative ways to fight back.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;If you watch a master surgeon performing with an expert team it&#8217;s like this beautiful coordinated dance.\u00a0 Its smooth and it flows.\u00a0 If you watch a trainee performing with the master it&#8217;s like two people having sex in a canoe!&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;From my master teachers I learned things like unwavering discipline, perseverance and grit.\u00a0 And the most important \u2013 courage.\u00a0 The courage to act.\u00a0 Surgery is about making a courageous decision and acting on it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s courageous action.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;When you start dancing with the mastery of heart surgery.\u00a0 You can become intuitive and you can apply your skills to problems you&#8217;ve never seen before.\u00a0 You can conjure up some kind of unconscious competence.\u00a0 You stop tempting nature and you become a part of nature.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;In the pursuit of mastery I had only focused on a person&#8217;s heart and now I could better appreciate the heart of the person.\u00a0 After a taste of mastery, I wasn&#8217;t operating <u>on the person<\/u> I was operating <u>for the person<\/u>.
