{"id":28326,"date":"2019-02-01T14:16:59","date_gmt":"2019-02-01T19:16:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/?p=28326"},"modified":"2019-02-26T18:19:54","modified_gmt":"2019-02-26T23:19:54","slug":"go-red-for-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/2019\/02\/01\/go-red-for-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s Go Red for Women!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you didn&#8217;t know, American Heart Month kicked off today. \u00a0To get things going, February 1 is always National Wear Red Day in support of the &#8220;Go Red for Women&#8221; campaign. \u00a0The goal of this awesome day is to raise awareness to heart disease and unite communities that are fighting for the eradication of heart disease and stroke.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/..\/Images\/go-red-woman-adam-pick.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"314\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That said, I couldn&#8217;t resist putting on the one red thing I own in support of the &#8220;Go Red for Women&#8221; initiative.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Heart Disease &amp; Women<\/h2>\n<p>As shared at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goredforwomen.org\">Go Red For Women<\/a> website by the American Heart Association (AHA), here are some important facts about heart disease and women that will help educate our patient community about this epidemic:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year.<\/li>\n<li>Some of the symptoms of heart attack include chest pressure, pain in one of both arms, back, jaw or stomach.<\/li>\n<li>Some of the symptoms of stroke include numbness or weakness in the face, confusion, trouble seeing, trouble walking and severe headache.<\/li>\n<li>Other concerns that may appear specific to heart disease include heart attack, atrial fibrillation and heart failure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As the Centers for Disease Control &amp; Prevention (CDC) notes on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/dhdsp\/data_statistics\/fact_sheets\/fs_women_heart.htm\">Women and Heart Disease Fact Sheet<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Risk factors for heart disease include high blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol and smoking. About 49% of the American population have at least one of these risk factors.<\/li>\n<li>Other medical conditions that can put people at higher risk include diabetes, obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity and stress.<\/li>\n<li>Coronary artery disease has unique cultural implications for white women (5.8%), African-American women (7.6%) and Mexican American women (5.6%).<\/li>\n<li>Up to 64% of women who die suddenly from coronary artery disease have no previous symptoms. \u00a0Yikes!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Ready to Get Involved?<\/h2>\n<p>I was happy to see that I&#8217;m not the only one getting red in our community. \u00a0 I just saw that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/journals\/user\/alinafh\">Alina<\/a> posted this picture. \u00a0She says, &#8220;This is all the red I could find: Happy National Wear Red Day to all! This is a day for heart health awareness for women in particular, but awareness is always good for all!
