The Heart Valve Summit\u00a0Gets Big Applause<\/h2>\n<p>In October, we were very lucky to attend the Heart Valve Summit, a special conference where 500+ surgeons, cardiologists, nurses, and medical professionals gather to discuss the latest therapies to treat heart valve disease. When we posted several pictures from the 3-day event in Chicago, our community quickly responded with appreciation and thankfulness as 950+ people &#8216;Liked&#8217; our photos at Facebook. Linda Returns To Her Garden!<\/h2>\n<p>There is nothing better than a great patient success story. So, in February, our video team traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana to meet Linda Kincaid and her daughter, Kristen. This educational video was sponsored by the Alliance for Aging Research which recently launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valvediseaseday.org\/\">LivingWithValveDisease.0rg<\/a>, a new website for\u00a0seniors with heart valve disease.\u00a0Upon\u00a0posting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/2015\/07\/14\/linda-kincaid-patient-marc-gerdisch-dr\/\">Linda&#8217;s video<\/a>,\u00a0this wonderful story racked up over 1,000 Facebook Likes. (Fyi, Linda&#8217;s surgery was performed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/surgeons\/dr-Marc-Gerdisch-Indianapolis-Indiana.php\">Dr. Marc Gerdisch<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z1-V78_1kas\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>8. AFib Awareness Skyrockets at\u00a0HVS<\/h2>\n<p>As up to 35% of patients with heart valve disease also have atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat), we spent a significant amount of time educating our community about AFib\u00a0this year. We launched the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/atrial-fibrillation\/\">AFib &amp; Heart Valve Education Center<\/a> and we posted several videos about concomitant AFib and heart valve therapies.<\/p>\n<p>In September, we were amazed to see the response to an educational post by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/surgeons\/dr-Gan-Dunnington-St.+Helena-California.php\">Dr. Gan Dunnington<\/a>. After posting Dr. Dunnington&#8217;s educational\u00a0story, <em>Top 5 Misconceptions of Atrial Fibrillation<\/em>, over 1,100 people quickly &#8216;Liked&#8217; the story. Cowgirl Julie&#8217;s Smiling Scar Selfie<\/h2>\n<p>They say a picture is worth a 1,000 words. But, the Smiling Scar Selfie of Julie McDonald-Lundren, a cowgirl from Minnesota, proved that a\u00a0Smiling Scar Selfie is with more &#8212; as over 1,200 people &#8216;Liked&#8217; it on Facebook. Just a few days after her successful aortic valve replacement by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/surgeons\/dr-Robert+Saeid-Farivar-Boise-Idaho.php\">Dr. Robert Saeid Farivar<\/a>, Julie posted this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/heartvalvesurgery\/photos\/a.493519294062096.1073741825.142324929181536\/881197365294285\/?type=3&amp;theater\">awesome picture at Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20197 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/..\/Images\/jml-cowgirl.jpg\" alt=\"Julie McDonald-Lundren, heart valve patient\" width=\"327\" height=\"391\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>6. Chicago Bulls Coach, Fred Hoiberg, Connects With HVS<\/h2>\n<p>In October, I had an amazing and unexpected opportunity to meet and film an educational video with Fred Hoiberg, the head coach of the Chicago Bulls. If you didn&#8217;t know, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fred_Hoiberg\">Coach Hoiberg<\/a> had two open heart surgeries to treat his bicuspid aortic valve and aortic aneurysm.<\/p>\n<p>Coach Hoiberg chose the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onxlti.com\">On-X mechanical valve<\/a>, which just received FDA-approval using lower warfarin levels,\u00a0for his procedure which was performed by Dr. Rakesh Suri. When we posted photos from the video shoot, over 1,200 Facebook Likes quickly occurred. Edwards Lifesciences Hosts &#8220;Patient Day&#8221; in Irvine<\/h2>\n<p>When I started this website nine years ago, I had a dream. My dream was that someday heart valve patients would connect in real-time to share their experiences as a community.\u00a0Well, that dream transformed into reality when Edwards Lifesciences, a leading heart valve manufacturer, volunteered to host \u201cPatient Day\u201d at its headquarters in Irvine, California. To capture the special moments of this event, in which 100 patients and caregivers met\u00a0in real-time, Edwards hired our team to film this experience.<\/p>\n<p>As you might expect, our community erupted in positive feedback to the Patient Day concept. Over 1,200 people &#8216;Liked&#8217; this video at Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>4. Community Rockstars:\u00a0Cris &amp; Tammy<\/h2>\n<p>The members in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/journals\/\">Community <\/a>continue to amaze me. There is so much support. There is so much care for one another. And, there are so many great connections being made. I could go on-and-on about all the special people who are part of this website. Recently, I shined a spotlight on two members &#8212; Tammy Pilcher &amp; Cris Dykeman &#8212; that have been overly active in our community. Within hours, this post received over 1,400 &#8216;Likes&#8217; in my blog. Brian Walsh Keeps On Runnin&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>He experienced a cardiac arrest, a coma, a mitral valve prolapse and an enlarged heart. However, none of that stopped Brian Walsh from continuing his passions &#8211; loving his family\u00a0and\u00a0running &#8211; thanks to a successful mitral valve repair surgery by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/surgeons\/dr-David-Adams-New+York-New%20York.php\">Dr. David Adams<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/hospital\/mount-sinai-heart-valve-clinic\">Mount Sinai Hospital<\/a> in New York.<\/p>\n<p>With over 2,000 Facebook Likes, this is Brian&#8217;s story:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4w-Km5f7fsE\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>2. A Live Webinar Blowout Thanks To Drs. McCarthy &amp; Thomas<\/h2>\n<p>Our live webinar series continued to educate patients &#8212; all over the world &#8212; this year. So, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/surgeons\/dr-Patrick-McCarthy-Chicago-Illinois.php\">Dr. Patrick McCarthy<\/a> and Dr. James Thomas from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/hospital\/northwestern-memorial-valve-program\">Northwestern Medicine<\/a> hosted, &#8220;Heart Valves &amp; Atrial Fibrillation: What Should You Know?&#8221;, the registrations for this event surged to\u00a0396 people. That said, we were really excited. With over 2,600 Facebook Likes, our community rallied around the idea that heart valve disease needs more awareness and education on a local, national and global level.
