{"id":1712,"date":"2010-07-22T08:49:01","date_gmt":"2010-07-22T13:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/?p=1712"},"modified":"2022-05-16T18:46:41","modified_gmt":"2022-05-16T23:46:41","slug":"allan-stewart-surgeon-patient-triathlon-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/2010\/07\/22\/allan-stewart-surgeon-patient-triathlon-new-york\/","title":{"rendered":"Greg and Dr. Stewart Complete Triathlon&#8230; Together!!!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Dr. Allan Stewart wrote to me, &#8220;<em>We<\/em> did <em>it!<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>It<\/em>&#8221; was the New York City triathlon.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/..\/Images\/dr-allan-stewart-triathlon-400.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Allan Stewart with Patient Running Triathlon\" width=\"400\" height=\"293\" \/>Dr. Allan Stewart (Surgeon) with Greg O&#8217;Keeffe (His Patient)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;<em>We<\/em>&#8221; was&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dr. Allan Stewart, Chief of Cardiac Surgery at Miami Cardiac &amp; Vascular Institute, and<\/li>\n<li>Greg O&#8217;Keeffe, Dr. Stewart&#8217;s patient who had aortic valve replacement just two years ago.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You may recall that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/heart-surgery-blog\/2010\/07\/11\/dr-allan-stewart-greg-okeeffe-triathlon-new-york\/\">Greg dared Dr. Stewart<\/a> to complete the endurance event to celebrate his surgery and raise awareness to heart valve disease. The triathlon included a 40-km bike ride, a 1500-meter swim in the Hudson River and 10-km run.<\/p>\n<p>Three days before the race, I met Dr. Stewart for lunch in New York City. There, I learned that Dr. Stewart, who lost 25 pounds while training, had recently fractured two ribs during a biking accident.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/Images\/allan-stewart-triathlon.jpg\" alt=\"Allan Stewart Loses 25 Pounds While Training For The New York City Triathlong\" width=\"344\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;The swim is going to be the hardest part,&#8221; Dr. Stewart told me as we walked along Fort Washington Avenue. &#8220;If I can make it through that, I&#8217;ll be fine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Make it he did.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Stewart, who performed over 300 cardiac procedures last year (most of which involved heart valve disorders), completed the triathlon in 3:45:51. The 28-year old O\u2019Keeffe, who co-founded EarthAid, finished the race in 3:03:59.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heart-valve-surgery.com\/Images\/greg-okeeffe-earthaid.jpg\" alt=\"Greg O'Keeffe Races During New York City Triathlon\" width=\"150\" height=\"200\" \/>Greg O&#8217;Keeffe Riding In The Triathlon<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As the <em>New York Times<\/em> reported, &#8220;Their postrace reunion was an unusual sight in Central Park. As runners crossed the finish line one by one and went their separate ways, Stewart and O\u2019Keeffe posed for photographs together and reflected on their friendship.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, completing a triathlon is an extraordinary accomplishment.
