Hello! My name is Dr. John Kern and I am a heart surgeon having graduated from University of Virginia Medical School in 1988. To date, I have performed approximately 3,000 cardiac surgical procedures, of which more than 1,000 involved heart valve operations. I perform surgery at University of Virginia Medical Center.
"Although this was my first major surgery and do not have much to compare it to, I thought my surgeon was as good as you can get. Doctor Kern came to my room every day to check on me personally. He also came in on a Sunday when he was off. I also saw the Fellow each day as well. I was so happy with my experience at University of Virginia and with Dr. Kern - I only wish he was more than a surgeon. Yes, he was that good."
My cardiac specialties include:
- Aortic valve surgery
- Mitral valve repair
- Heart valve reoperations and transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR)
Relative to heart valve surgery, I have the following clinical interests:
- Heart failure
- Mechanical circulatory support
"I believe my greatest strength as a heart surgeon is my thorough, multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
In addition, I have spent over 15 years working with emerging technologies to advance cardiac health including devices, products, and procedures specific to valvular therapy, ventricular assist devices and stents."
