Hello! My name is Dr. Gan Dunnington and I am a cardiac surgeon having graduated from Medical College of Virginia in 2001. To date, I have performed approximately 1,500 cardiac surgeries, of which 1,000 involved heart valve procedures. I regularly perform surgery at St. Helena Hospital. Read more...
I believe my greatest strength is that I take great pride in offering a full array of options to all patients undergoing valve surgery.
These options include sternotomy versus minimally invasive sternal sparing techniques, as well as valve repair versus replacement options. Repair options include aortic root surgery, mitral valve surgery, as well as tricuspid surgery. I attempt to specifically tailor the operation to the patients needs and wishes. Many patients may be good minimally invasive candidates, but appropriate expectations must be addressed, with patient safety always the most important factor.
Moreover, I have a specific interest in atrial fibrillation treatment, and make sure that it is always addressed at time of cardiac surgery. My patients have ongoing, direct access to me by cell phone and email as well as our nurse navigator throughout their entire surgical experience.
"I had a feeling of confidence with Dr. Dunnington. He explained everything to me. The minute I woke up. I was fixed."
-- Jeff Baily, patient
"Dr. Dunnington is an excellent surgeon, as well as, a fine person. His bedside manner is exceptional. He performed a mitral valve repair with a Maze procedure to correct my atrial fibrillation."
