Hi friends on the heart valve journal site. It is exactly 29 years ago this day that I had my open heart surgery. doing wonderful, leading a happy life.
It was December 1983. As a journalist, I was attending Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in New Delhi which was attended by over 100 top Prime Ministers and Presidents of the world.
On one working day, it was all blind for a moment. all blank before my eyes. After few minutes, I was back to normal. I did not reveal this to anyone and continued my routine.
This blankness continued and on January 14, 1984, I was standing before the mirror (after my bath) and combing my hair when I had this blankness once again. My wife was calling me from kitchen and I could hear only her voice and could not reply. When she came, she saw my condition.
The very same evening, I went to my physician who diagnosed that something is wrong with my heart, but can not treat me further and referred me to a nearby Cardiologist.
After an ECG, the doctor told me that I have a congenital heart problem, that my Aortic Valve need to be replaced.
Since then, the process of medication started and fnally on November 29, 1984 I underwent an Open Heart Surgery at All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi and the surgery was performed by Dr. A.S. Sampath Kumar.
Even though the doctor advised 7 years of good life, I am still active on 27th year and doing well.
In 1984, several things were not known to the common man and open heart surgery was a new thing and everyone was afraid.
