This is Robyn with an update. Roy was discharged today. A very happy day! We went through about a 45 minute course with his nurse on meds. Thank God it's all written down! Along with tons of reading material on do's and dont's. I will say Cleveland Clinic is thorough! And we had excellent care. The Cardiac nurses are wonderful!! They have care down to a science.. For their step down cardiac care..We will be staying at a hotel for 2 nights in Cleveland then Thursday we go back to hospital for post-op tests and physical.. Then he will be released and will follow up with Weston FL Cleveland Clinic Cardiologist in 4 to 6 weeks. After appt Thursday we will stay with my sister in Canton until we fly out on Dec 23 Monday.. My son and his wife are flying up on the 20th and they will be driving my car home.. Yeah... We can't wait to get back to Florida!! I have really had enough cold weather..and Roy can get to walking with out worrying he is gonna slip on ice!! And of course warm weather!! We have been so Blessed to be able to come to Cleveland Clinic and have so many awesome freinds praying!!

This is Robyn... I feel like I lost a day?? LOL So Roy got moved to step down after only one day in ICU . He is now in a private room with a roommate .. Me..at 3:00 am he went into Afib but was not symptomatic.. He was actually sleeping and the nurses saw it on the monitor.. He was started on meds to control it and by about 1:00 pm he went back into normal sinus rhythm .. Thank God! That kinda made me nervous but, they said that was normal. He is eating great! And has had 3 walks today.. The floor doctor told him he was not on bed rest so walk as often as he felt like it! The surgeon Dr. Smedira came by and said he was doing great.. And I asked him again exactly what he did.. He did myectomy removed 7 grams from his septum and one stitch through the papillary muscle buds to tack in place one that was flopping around.. By doing that stopped the leaking mitral valve! Dr. Smedira pioneered this procedure ... (Wrote the paper on it) ... Roy had a chest x-Ray today and will have Echo tomorrow. He is getting pain meds every 6 hours.. They also put lidocaine patches on each side of his incision everyday for pain also.. His incision looks great they did a dissolving blind stitch ..Roy does say he kinda feels a Mac truck ran over him! Thank You to everybody for all the wonderful thoughts and prayers.. Please continue praying for a normal recovery..

A long long day!! We were up at 4:00 AM . He was taken up to Induction at 7:30 AM first incision was 9:10 PM the surgeon Dr. Smedira came out to give me the news at 12:20 PM.. And the news was just what we prayed for !! He did small myectomy then used that tissue to repair the papillary muscles .. One of those little muscle buds was flapping all over the place so he sutured them all together then anchored them in place..so now the mitral valve can work properly!!! Yeah !!!! I was crying happy happy tears!! I even hugged Dr Smedira and thanked him!!! I think I took him by surprise!!! LOL. Went to ICU at 2:30 pm. Roy still intibated..they where bringing him out of sedation slowly.. But he looked great.. We left ICU went back about 2 hours later and tubes out and was starting to feel a little shoulder and back pain.. So they hooked him up to pain pump.. Yeah for pain meds!!! Will add more later..

Well, we got clearance from the oral surgeon. There is a hole in the sinus from the tooth extraction. But it is healed and will have to have it closed surgically but this can be done later.. No infection and that's the main thing.. Will have to continue to rinse with salt water after every meal..finally met with Dr. Smedira after over a 3 hour wait... He is hoping to repair mitral valve.. And that's what we are praying for.. If can't be repaired it will be replaced with pig or cow valve.. Real valve so he does not have to be on blood thinner.. Since he rides horses you never know if your gonna hit the ground.. So no blood thinner.. Soooo we are praying very specific. Mitral valve repair.. Dr. Smedira said the septum was only slightly thickened so he may not have to cut any of that away..We just got the call to be at hospital at 6:00 AM. Surgery at 8:00 AM. And in surgery about 4-5 hours .. The actual repair only takes one hour.. Thanks in advance for all the prayers!! Love to all Robyn and Roy

This is again Robyn, Well today was a long day! Started off with lab, EKG, and chest x-ray. Then it was off to cardiologist pre-op physical. Next was pre-op with Dr. Smedira's PA lots of questions. Watched a video about what to expect . She then sent him to dental clinic to make sure there was no infection from tooth that was pulled 3 wks ago. ( it was an upper tooth which in result caused a small hole in his maxillary sinus) So far the tooth thing has caused concern which I'm glad they are being so thorough.. They are having an oral surgeon look at it tomorrow for second opinion and to be sure all is okay before surgery!!! Great place so far and everybody very nice and helpful. Back in the morning for oral surgeon second opinion and pre-op meeting with Dr. Smedira the Cardiothoracic surgeon. Then Wednesday as long as all is clear with oral surgeon.. Is the big day...praying all will be fine.. This is kinda like a roller coaster ride! And thanks to all for lifting us up in prayer at this time...
