My 17 year old son will be needing aortic Valve Replacement from a unicuspid aortic valve. He will also need to have an aneurysm repaired at the same time. We are looking at the On X valve versus a pig/cow valve. I am seeking others who have either had this valve or who were this young when they had the replacement. Very interested in your experience and coumadin life. Thanks

Cathy Zuber Hi Lori...I only have Coumadin experience. My mitral valve was replaced. I actually started Coumadin in 2010 after an ablation..and a blood clot. Switched to Pradaxa a few years later. Now , of course, I'm back on Coumadin. I try to keep a balance of leafy greens about twice a week..just be consistent . Follow dr's orders re dosage and INR testing. Tell yr son not to get discouraged by all this...Heaven knows the medical advances in his bright future!! What another few years of research can bring to his future!!
Lori Price Thank you for the feedback, I greatly appreciate it!

Donna Reynolds Hi Lori. My 22 year old son had an aortic valve replacement/root replacement three and a half months ago. He chose to go with the tissue/pig valve. He wanted to avoid the blood thinners.

Lori Price Great to hear. My son is thinking of taking the same route. He is concerned about taking coumadin. How is your son doing? Was the surgery what he thought it would be. I have been through OHS with my father 3 times, and I am a nurse, but it is a different story with these young men of ours.
My son is curious about how long did it take for your son to get back to his normal routine. Thanks for responding, Your son experience is helpful for mine to hear . I am having him read this blog. where did he have it done?
Adela Morsz Hi Lori, I have found some info which could be usefull:

IRVINE, Calif., July 5, 2017 --Edwards Lifesciences Corporation (NYSE: EW), the global leader in patient-focused innovations for structural heart disease and critical care monitoring, today announced it received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for its INSPIRIS RESILIA aortic valve, the first in a new class of resilient heart valves.

Hello,
My son was born with a unicuspid aortic valve and now has developed an aortic aneursym/ He is 13 and has no symptoms. Surgery is not necessary yet, but is anticipated in the next year or two if the aneursym grows.
I am interested in learning from others on how they chose the type of valve replacement they now have and if they would do the same today. I have been to CHOP and the Mayo clinic. One recommends a pig valve and repair of the aneursym, the other recommends mechanical and or the ross procedure. I am a nurse so I am very familiar with coumadin and the side effects.
What are your thoughts out there? Lori
