The last chest tube has been removed, and we're now waiting the required two hours until he can transition down to the step down unit. We're told there is a bed available, so it's just a matter of time! He's tired, but there are glimpses of his smile and sense of humor, which is awesome to see. Sophie was actually the one (by phone) who was able to elicit the most hearty laughter. He's very much looking forward to showering, and I can't wait to have them get that IV out of his neck. And, maybe someplace more comfortable to sit. Any thoughts about great gifts for the ICU staff are appreciated. He wanted to send flowers, but I'm thinking cookies or something would be more appreciated. :-)

I arrived this morning at about 9, and he was sitting up in a chair with breakfast in front of him. And he was grumpy. Both are indicators of great progress! He did better moving from bed to chair, needing only one person to help, and being much less short of breath. They asked me to leave to tend to some things, and when I came back, another one of his chest tubes had been removed, so there is only one left. That has made a huge difference in his pain. I've gotten many generous offers of help, for which I'm very grateful. I need to take someone up on the offer. Because Jim will be here all week, we're going to spend Thanksgiving here. The kids are going back to Buffalo tomorrow after they're able to see him, and I need to get them back to Cleveland Wednesday evening. My mother offered to meet someone in Erie, PA, which is only an hour and a half from Buffalo. Is there someone who would be willing to get the kids from our house in Wales and drive them to Erie Wednesday evening? Please email to darcicb@gmail.com if it's something you can do. Thanks so much!
