Just found out this morning about your surgery and you are all in my thoughts and prayers as you go through this very difficult and trying time. Tracy, I can relate more with your husband and the rollercoaster of emotions he is experiencing as I went through heart valve surgery with my husband 12-13 years ago. At the time, it is such an emotional process, but you sound as though you have a wonderful support system through family and friends, which is soooo important, and also a strong religious belief, which is also soooo very important. God will see you through and hold you all close to his heart as your journey continues to progress. You know why I love this site? Because I love spreading happiness and good thoughts! That's exactly what I'm going to do now (I'm going to rename myself the heart valve fairy!)

I'm in the U.K., I'm 31 and I've been through aortic valve surgery twice ( the last was 8 weeks ago) - just so you know where I'm coming from.

You're bound to worry about things and it is an emotional roller coaster, but I want you to realise what great hands you're in. These surgeons know their stuff! Even on my second time, I was worried, scared and confused, maybe more so that the first time. But when I went through it again, it was not how I remembered it. It seemed easier! I think my mind had scared me from the previous time.

As you said, step at a time... That's the best thing! Just remember, try to get some good sleep before, think positive thoughts and remember it's a procedure they do all the time!

When you wake up, you won't be in a lot of pain, you will be nicely dosed. You might feel a little sick, and you'll be thirsty, but your body will have a good way of coping bit by bit. You'll be sore over the next few days, and you'll sleep lots (this is the best bit) but everyday you'll see how it gets better. Everyone worries about the aftermath, please don't! Bit by bit, you'll be feeling better and walking around in no time. Like I said, time number two seemed easier in many ways, because I'd worried myself and then realised it wasn't as hard as I remembered!

I really do which you the speediest of recoveries!

Welcome to HVJ! I had my aorta valve replaced (mechanical) almost ten weeks ago. It was quite the journey, but I feel great now.

You'll probably hear this a lot here, but it's true-- the pre-surgery stress is the worst part. It will be a few tough days, but you'll get through just fine.

This is a great place to get questions answered, so ask away.
