Mike. I had a St. Jude ring implant on my mitral valve four years ago. I had no symptoms. All went well. I was sixty three. Trust your surgeon and hospital. Please keep me updated on your progress.

Mike I am 64 yrs old and 9 wks post mitral repair. I had many of the same thoughts and concerns as you. I knew about my valve 30 yrs ago. I decided to wait for change in regurge status or symptoms. When regurge increased had a repair of valve and chordate at Cleveland Clinic, Dr Marc Gillinov. Care and surgery outstanding. Minor post op pain.

Hi Mike-I'm also with Kaiser here in San Diego. When it was time for my surgery, I found that Kaiser contracts their heart surgery out to Scripps Hospital. I asked my cardiologist to recommend a surgeon if it was he or a family member in need of open heart surgery. He didn't hesitate when he replied: Dr. Scot Brewster. I would suggest pursuing a consultation with Dr. Brewster. The care I recieved was truly amazing. For what it's worth, sooner rather than later. Best of luck!

Mike - I also had many thoughts in my 2 years waiting for the gs to possibly turn better not get more symptomatic. ..now 18 more post OP-MVR-could not be happier with the way things turned out. I am quite a bit older than you so the getting back in shape is even harder than prior to the procedure. I had regurgitation - mild prolapse - and ruptured chordae. I tell my kids I had new "bungie" cords put in and valve trimmed---.18 month now- I am RX free - on natural supplements only. You and your family will not regret your decision. Check out my page. A dam's book is great.

Hi Mike,
Just went through my second aortic valve replacement a month ago and all I can say is make sure your surgeon has lots of experience!!! And also look up the statistics of your hospital and their standing for these surgeries! St Joseph's hospital is one of the best in Orange County and my surgeon , Dr Palafox is considered the best in his field. I'm doing great and I'm 66. The younger you are the better chances of a good recovery . I don't know much about Kaiser in this area but you can never do too much research!!! Best of luck!!
Mike Nunes  Yeah, I have done a ton. Dr. Yun does about 40 of these repairs a year for the last 15 years, so he ... Read more

Welcome to the group Mike!

I've also read Adam's book for the information and come to this site and the journals for the support. It's great to hear others' stories and experiences.

Like you, I've got mitral regurgitation. Not as young as you but still pretty young (48). Also pretty much asymptomatic - or at least able to explain away they typical symptoms by saying I'm out of shape or kind of overweight...

Whatever you decide to do, I wish you the best.

Mike,
I will be praying God gives you clear insight as to what to do next. You are so young, my oldest daughter is only 2 years younger than you. You have your whole life ahead of you to enjoy with your wife and child. I can only speak from my experience, but Dr. Yun did my surgery and I was treated very well at Sunset and 12 weeks post op I'm feeling pretty great, and I'm much older than you:) best wishes with whatever you decide to do.
