Hi Joe,
That is one of the downfalls of this surgery. My surgery was actually cancelled twice. I was originally scheduled for May 14, then got a phone call to reschedule for May 19, then got a phone call the day before postponing until June 2nd. Finally, June 2nd I had my surgery. Rattles the nerves some, but worth the wait. Diana

Hello, Joseph.

Thanks for the well wishes on my recovery. I have read your journal too and I wish you a successful surgery and God-speed recovery. Don't hesitate to contact me if you need support during your recovery. One suggestion is to get away from the pain killers as soon as you can and start using Ibuprofen. Of course you need to follow your Doctor's and Nurses recommendation, but I can tell you from experience that getting off the pain medicine sooner than later and walking daily definitely facilitated a quicker recovery for me. I hope you chose the steak for dinner; great source of nutrients like Magnesium, Iron and Zinc your body will need during recovery. If you aren't on supplements for the above nutrients, I recommend you start.

You have a lot of support in our community; don't hesitate to reach out if you need us.

God Bless,
Daniel

Joe - sounds like you have an awesome surgeon... Also on your side is that October 27th is my mom's birthday so it will be a good day ;-) I hope you chose the steak over tofu for dinner tonight, but I suppose steak doesn't help the cholesterol issue... We all missed you at the high school reunion on Saturday night. Many prayers are coming your way... God bless you. Barb

Hi Joseph,
Sounds like you dotted your "I"s and crossed your "T"s. You will be just fine. The surgery itself afterwards is a piece of cake. Sure, you will have some hiccups along the way, but are minor and expected. Adams book is full of information, it helped me a great deal and was a terrific tool. I didn't experience any depression after my surgery. I was so happy my symptoms were gone right after surgery that there really wasn't anything to be depressed about. I felt like a new person. I'm 20 wks post op, I'm in rehab and loving every minute of it. I feel wonderful and getting stronger every day. They tell me that it takes a good year for you to recover completely, so be patient.
I wish you all the best,
Diana

Hi, Joe:
Best of luck on your surgery next week. The whole process is, overall, not as bad as most of your fears, and you will be amazed, in a very few days, how remarkable the whole procedure is. You might wake up in the Intensive Care Unit with tubes down your throad and all sorts of people hovering around you with the thought, "I must have been insane to agree to this." But that quickly passes. It only lasts about 12 hours, most of which you'll be unconscious, so it's not so bad. After that each hour, each day, seems like a miracle. My first thought when I woke up was one of great joy, "I'm ALIVE!" Then somehow I got through the tubes (which come out rather quickly) and the monitors and in 36 hours found myself being wheeled to my regular room.
When I got home from the hospital on Day 6, everyone expected me to languish in bed and ask people to fetch and carry for me, but I was immediately able to enjoy sitting up and visiting with people.
You'll be fine. I'm 71, and a lot older than you, and if I can get through this fairly easily, you can too.

Hi Joseph,

Sounds like you are getting ready. A lot of the mesurements and what fits best where take place once they get in there. Thye have everything to pick from, and tehy'll get you fitted just right. One thing I can share with you is Dr. Gillinov does not typically use Coumadin post op with a tissue valve. Just a baby aspirin.

Good luck,

Mark

You are fortunate Dr G had a cancellation! He did my surgery March 18th and I was given my surgical date the first week in January, so had to wait 2 1/2 months! It was a true lesson in patience for me. He is an excellent surgeon and his staff and the Clinic are #1, so you made a wise choice. Wishing you a smooth surgery and recovery.
