Missy, I have been following Jim's progress, I had an aortic valve replaced last october and I would defy you to tell other than the scar left behind. He will feel 3x better than the day before for the first week or so, if his recovery is the same. I am 53 and would do it again in a heartbeat, no reservations, he will be his old self within 45 days I am quite sure, as good a shape as he is in. Great luck and thanx for updating.

Jim & Missy,
I am following Jim's surgery and progress. I too had my surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. Once they rolled me into the pre-op area the anesthesiologist walked behind me and it was lights out. Thank goodness. They knew I was terribly anxious. As for the shaving, they shaved the public area where they connect the bypass machine and I guess in men they shave the chest. I was not awake for that. Please tell Jim I'm thinking of him and wishing him the best. He's in the best place he could possibly be - CCF. Best wishes. Ruth Howell

Hi Jim and Missy –

I had my surgery at CCF on Sept 2 for a Mitral Valve Repair with Dr. Sabik --- my heart is now working the way that God had intended it to !!!!! – you are in wonderful hands at CCF – The nurses and care givers on the step down floor are incredible --- listen to what the Dr’s and nurses are telling you and you will be lacing up your running shoes before you know it.

All day I've been thinking of the right thing to post because I don't do the social site thing. David and I will be keeping you, Missy, Shelby, and Maddie in our prayers daily.

You are the best boss I could have ever asked for. Your faith will keep you safe and strong in this journey.

However, upon return for your birthday this year, I will have to hone the skills of fruit and vegetable carving and arranging because cake is now off the menu! LOL

Hi Jim,
I'm sending you my very best wishes for a quick uncomplicated surgery and a speedy recovery. Dr. Gillinov (CCF) did my surgery in April. Jim,
I just read through your entire Heart Valve Journal (having just found out about its existence from you only 10 days before your surgery!. Your partners should really give you a hard time about that, but I guess I'll go easy on you since you are so close to the big day; :)).
I am confident that you will do great; you are in teriffic shape, you are going to a great medical center, and you have so many people who care deeply for you and will be praying for you. I will be one of those people.
By the way, tell your daughter that she is correct: you are the best doctor in the world, and the best partner also!

Jim,

It is normal to start scecond guessing before the surgery. If you remember, I thought about putting mine off because I was asymptomatic. It turned out that it was a good thing I didn't because they found something that remarkably hadn't broken loose and killed me!

Yes you will have discomfort and inconvenience, but it is worth it. You are young and strong, have the support of a loving family and good friends! Trust in your faith when I tell you that God's got your back brother. That's why you found this so early.

If you need anything, you let me know! In the mean time... physician heal thy self!

Your Friend Always,

Hi JIm,
I just want to say its been 4 weeks to the day since my surgery and the feedback and support I have recieved from the people on this website has been so helpful and supportive.
Just PRAY, HOPE AND DONT WORRY.
You are about to embark on a journey which will change your life. Many days of ups and downs. But after a while it will all be put into perspective that it was all worth it.
God Bless,
John Madonna

Jim:

I saw your note back to me- Cleveland Clinic - you are in the best hands possible. Great News. Hey the best comfort and sometimes the only comfort in waiting for your op is that you have been given a gift, my wife really reinforced this every time I had doubts or fears. Most days it seemed surreal and some days the reality set in and I kind of freaked out. But knowing I was given the foresight that so many others didnt get, I really believe it was a gift.

It has been a life changing experiece for me. It was not easy, but I know that I am being given a second chance I am bound and determined to make everything I can out of it and not waste one second looking back.

My thoughts and prayers will be with you. Keep your spirits up and enjoy every minute.

Jim;

Your situation is almost identical to mine. Found it the same way, etc. My valve was in good shape though. My root got to 5.4 and I saw surgeon who told me it was time to get it done. The decision and waiting were agonizing for me and my family. I wanted to wait, everyone else says go. I ran into a web site with hundreds of posts from people who had went through a dissection. The posts from the widows of the guys who had died from dissection made my decision easier. I went forward, the waiting was so hard.

I am four weeks post op and I know I did the right thing.

I enjoyed reading your posts. I'm about 3 weeks post-op and going through good days when I can rest enough. I'm finding that if I overdo it, I pay for it the next day.

I think your fitness will definitely help recovery. I was pretty active with cardio and weights before surgery, and I think that prevented me from having a lot of chest/back pain.

Keep up the good work,

Jim,

Your cath will go fine. As for the air conditioning, that sounds uncomfortable. Try putting on a Hawaian shirt, some Buffet music and a frosty rum beverage lol. In all seriousness, GOD has a plan for you. Keep your faith and know that no matter what arises, GOD is with you brother.

Take Care,
Jeff R
