I had a mitral valve replacement in 2003. I am on Coumadin 7 mg daily and my levels are in the correct range. My issue is that I am having frequent nosebleeds, especially during the night. My doctor does not seem concerned. It seems to happen during the daytime whenever I bend over. My blood pressure is low normal. I am concerned.

Jean Raber Debbie, I'd also make sure your doctor understands that this is disrupting your sleep and is worrying you. Sometimes they don't get it if you aren't the kind who fusses. Maybe it's not the Coumadin at all, but at the very least, it can't be pleasant to wake up in the night with nosebleeds, and it would be something you'd want to fix.
If he still doesn't care, I would get a second opinion.
Occasionally some people can't tolerate the Coumadin dose they're being given to keep their INRs in the "perfect" zone, so they take a slightly lower dose.
I hope you get some answers! Please let us know.

Debbie Quigley Thank you all for your responses. I am worried. These have been going on for months. I did have them checked but was told it was seasonal allergies. Sometimes I feel they are not listening to me, I am not the type of person who calls constantly.

Jean Raber Allergies sure do cause nosebleeds, but if they've been going on for months, that's probably not the cause. You could have a weak blood vessel made weaker by the Coumadin. Even if you were a whiner, your doctor is wrong to be blowing you off. Please do get a second opinion.

Autumn Griffin I would use a humidifier by your bed and maybe use a saline mist nasal spray or even a nasal moisturizer gel called Ayr nasal gel. Both are over the counter. The blood vessels in the nose are very fragile and any irritation can cause them to bleed. Especially, if you are on Coumadin. Also, if it starts bleeding put pressure on your nose by pinching it and you can apply ice too. But make sure you apply pressure for at least 20 minutes. I know this because I am a nurse and worked at an urgent care center and this is what we would educate patients about with nosebleeds.

Autumn Griffin I would recommend you go see an Ear Nose and throat doctor if you haven't yet. He can definitely tell you if it is just allergies or something more concerning. But in the mean time if you haven't tried the nasal moisturizing it may be helpful. You could even try a little antibiotic ointment if you have an especially dry or stabbed area.
If he still doesn't care, I would get a second opinion.
