I had my second open heart for valve replacement done with a bovine valve in 2010. I've been told that these valves last approximately 10 years so I constantly walk around with this cloud hanging over me that I only have about 5 years left. I don't think I can handle going through a third open heart (mentally more than physically). I wish I had known about this site earlier and it would have helped me so much emotionally.

Ericka Carlson Hi Cathy, you definitely came to the right place. :) Do you mind me asking how old you are? The good news is that the older you get the longer the valves last, so this one should last you longer than the last. Second good news, they are working hard on perfecting transcatheter aortic valve replacement which means no open heart and just an overnight stay for a new valve!
All hope is not lost, 5 years is a LONG time, you never know what the genius minds in cardio will come up with next. :)

Lilly Black Ericka, this is such a nice positive post for Cathy. I am 63 and have a bovine valve. Doctor said it will last approx 18 yrs. When it fails I can get the trans cath procedure. Like you Cathy, I don't want any more surgery. But try not to stress out ...easier said than done. I know. What make of valve is it? Mine is Edwards Lifesciences Magna Ease.
