Hello,
Alan's surgery was done yesterday (Sunday) morning. The surgeon was able to repair the mitral valve by removing the flail segment and adding a ring to tighten it. He said the valve was leaking a lot of blood because a couple of the cords were broken. When he was done fixing it, the leak was gone. He was taken to surgery at 9 am and was finished at 1:30 p.m. and spent until 12:30 today in the Cardiac ICU. His pain is being managed quite nicely.
He is now recovering in a regular room on the Telemetry Floor and was up (assisted) and sitting in a chair 24 hours after surgery.
Remarkable!

Just got another call from Cardiac Surgeons Office notifying me that my Surgery has been moved again. My Surgeon will be out sick for a while longer and the Chief of Cardiac Surgery will be taking over my case and performing my surgery. I will be meeting with him tomorrow.
Now we have to notify all family members of this date change yet again. Let's hope this in the last change, as I have to start my prep again.
This has been very frustrating and I have a lot of anxiety now. I just want to get through this surgery and move on to the recovery phase.
Good luck to all those who are now having their surgery or in their recovery.

I just got a call from the surgeons office yesterday afternoon changing my date again for my surgery. The surgeon is out ill and will not be in this week. Surgery has now been moved from today to Monday 05/19.
This surgery date has been a roller coaster having been changed 3 times now. I am very anxious to get this surgery performed, so I can move on to the recovery stage and start feeling better.
I had already started my prep for the surgery and will now have to start again this weekend. Hopefully there will not be any more date changes.
Now that I have all of the tasks completed which needed to be done prior to surgery, I can not sit back and rest up for my surgery day.

This cuts one day off my schedule to get things down around the house in preparation for the summer and recovery. Things are getting hectic now, but looking forward to getting this done and on the road to recovery.

Went to Hospital for pre-surgery tests and consultation with cardiac pre-op. Had blood work, other tests and chest X-rays. Had lunch at hospital, so that my wife could find the cafeteria for meals, when we come in for surgery next week. The Cardiac Nurse went over the procedure and explained the team of people who would be caring for me from the time I arrive until I am ready to go home.
Time is flying by and there is so much to do at home to prepare for this.

Is anyone experiencing constant headaches? I have headaches periodically through the day, depending on my activities. We thought it was related to the Lisinopril, but I was taken off of that over a week ago and am still experiencing them.

Met with the Cardiac Surgeon to discuss procedure and got all questions answered. He is very personable an answered all of our questions on the procedure. He also played us a video which showed more detail on the exact procedure for Mitral Valve Repair. He asked the question: If there is chance they need to replace the valve, what choice we would approve, bovine or mechanical. We chose mechanical, even though it would mean taking Coumadin for the rest of my life. He mentioned that he felt that there was a 90% chance that they would be performing a valve repair.
We will be going on a trip for 4 weeks, before the surgery, so setup all appointments for pre-surgical tests and preparation. Will be going back for tests on May 8th and surgery scheduled for May 14th.
Will report back after we return from Myrtle Beach and have the tests.

Received a call from my Surgeons office, to remind me, that we have an appointment on Friday for pre-surgery consultation. This will be my opportunity to meet my surgeon and get some of my questions answered. We discussed when I would need to get my pre-op tests done and they indicated that they would be scheduled for the week before surgery.
Surgery is scheduled for May 14th 07:30 a.m and have to be at hospital for 05:30 a.m. . It is a relief to finally have a date to shoot for, as I have a lot of things to prepare for before surgery.

Had an appointment with Cardiologist for routine checkup before we go on vacation. After having an EKG, Dr. listened to my heart and said that I have a pretty good murmur. Discussed some of the issues I was having and he mentioned to take it easy, while gone away. Discussed the level of care that will be provided after surgery, along with post op rehab.
I will not be seeing him again until after surgery.
