About Me (In My Own Words)
In 2007, at the age of 37, I was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. I have a bicuspid aortic valve, regurgitation and left bundle branch block. In the time since then I have had two stress tests followed by two myocardial perfusion tests, cardiac MRI, one cath and numerous echos.
My local cardiologist, Dr Jay Varanasi, is really great! How many doctors call you after hours at home to check on you or to discuss your progress? Not many. He has done a really good job managing my conditions and I have nothing but compliments for him and his staff.
It is now time for the valve to be replaced. I know that we have made a good decision by going to the cardiologists at Duke University Medical Center since they are the leading center—in both treatment and education—in the southeast for adult congenital heart defects (ACHD). My Duke cardiologist, Dr Thomas Bashore, is one of the best in the nation when it comes to ACHD, and he has been super to my family and me during this process.
