My Story:
I am 61 and have had mitral and tricuspid valve regurgitation for over 10 years. I am a victim of the diet drug Phen Phen. I had an echo in 2000 which is how it was discovered. Since then, I have taken different heart medications to control blood pressure and fluid retention.

About two weeks ago I had my annual echo and a follow up call from my doctor. It was not good news. What had been stable all this time, has suddenly made a significant turn for the worse. She said my mitral valve was significantly less effective, and then we discussed surgery.

I am having a heart cath on Monday and we will see from there what will be the next step. She said that they must be careful not to do the surgery either too soon or too late. I am confused about that at the present. I would like more clarity about the too soon or too late. So this latest development has thrown me considerably. I think I had become complacent about my valves ever getting worse.
