About Me (In My Own Words)
In late 2011, I was initially diagnosed with AFib and mitral valve stenosis, likely attributable to a untreated childhood infection. First signs included shortness of breath and difficulty walking up stairs and inclines. My first cardiologist recommended a cardioversion for the Afib. I came to learn that the cardioversion was very risky since I had a stenotic valve. The second and current cardiologist recommended I have the TEE, which confirmed the need for valve replacement. The stenosis was deemed, "severe". I sought a second opinion from Columbia Presbyterian (Dr. Craig Smith) and he agreed that I needed a replacement. Met Dr. David Adams and scheduled the surgery.
