About Me (In My Own Words)
I'm 52 years old and otherwise healthy. Ten years ago my bicuspid valve and root enlargement were discovered by echocardiogram. I've been monitored periodically since and was told earlier this year that I should have a valve sparing root replacement done within a 6-12 month time frame. My surgeon is Dr. Ikonomidis at MUSC, who has an impeccable professional reputation. I went to Cleveland Clinic in February for a 2nd opinion. Dr. Lars Svenson agreed that my first opinion was valid. Married with two wonderful children; 15 year old daughter and 11 year old son. Really good family and friendship support. My work is being very understanding as well. Surgery is scheduled for July 10th. I know all of the statistics; while this is a complicated surgery with serious risks, I should do well in both the short and the long run. With this said, why am I so scared?!? Closer to terrified, really? Any suggestions for coping with the last month before surgery would be highly appreciated.
