About Me (In My Own Words)
My Mother had told me I was born with a malformed aortic valve causing a murmur. In 1979, a cardiologist drew a picture of a normal tricuspid valve alongside a picture of a bicuspid valve and explained regurgitation. He said not to worry about it but maybe 30-35 years down the road I may need a valve replacement but maybe by then there may be less invasive and lower risk remedies. Now 31 years later, I had a heart attack in April 2010 where they stented the 90% blocked artery and the doctor said he could not cross-over due to a heavily calcified bicuspid aortic valve and that valve replacement surgery is in the cards in the near future. I have puchased and read Adam Pick's "The Patient's Guide to Heart Valve Surgery" and researched much on the internet. In June 2009, my AVA was at 1.6 cm2 (mild). In July 2010, my AVA was at 1.1 cm2 (moderate). On Jan.17, 2011, my AVA is at 0.77 cm2 (severe) in addition to an enlarged aortic root with 1/4 AI. Now just awaiting a call. I am anticipating aortic valve replacement surgery being done by Dr. Benoit de Varennes at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal.
