About Me (In My Own Words)
I was diagnosed about 5 years ago with a congenital bicuspid aortic valve with some calcification due to a heart murmur presenting during my annual physical. The cardiologist at the time didn't seem too worried and was rather vague about follow up. I went through a few years of no insurance after that, so followup wasn't an option. Last year I was diagnosed with a rare condition that was putting pressure on my spinal cord and required surgery to avoid quadriplegia. That required a visit to a (new) cardiologist to be sure my heart could take the surgery. He wanted to operate on my heart first, but I didn't want to delay the neck surgery. After further tests, he decided heart surgery could wait an indefinite time, so I went ahead with the neck surgery last August. I've been feeling worse and worse the last few months, so I was not surprised when my cardiologist told me last week that the stenosis had become severe and surgery is now required.
