About Me (In My Own Words)
In 2003 I was diagnosed with aortic bicuspid stenosus and was told that I will need surgery someday. I am 38 years old now and my valve has been getting worse. I live an active life stile. I exercise almost everyday, run, mountain bike, or workout. I am totally asymptomatic. In October my doctor limited my heart rate when exercising to 165 bpm. I had been running 7.5 minute miles but with the heart rate restriction I am now running 8 minute miles. On Monday April 23rd I took a stress test. I was able to do the stress test for 18.5 minutes and the nurse stop me when my heart rate reached 190 bpm. I thought I did good, my doctor said that my performance on the stress test was amazing given the condition of my valve. The bad news is that because i have no symptoms I am at a high risk of sudden death since I will not notice if my heart is over exerting. I have an appointment in July to schedule surgery. I am planning on getting a tissue valve so that I will not need to be on blood thinners. Until the surgery no running outside of a gym and no mountain biking.
