About Me (In My Own Words)
I have had an aortic aneurism with mild aortic valve regurgitation for about 20 years, The aneurism was originally about 4.8 cm and has very gradually enlarged to 5.0 cm. Original recommendation was to have surgery at 5.5 cm but the newest data is advising to take into account body mass. With my height and weight that means surgery is advised at 5.0 cm so I decided to go for it finally. The procedure will be an ascending aorta graft with aortic root replacement using valved conduit.
I am happy I waited because now that I am older it is even more justifiable to go with organic valve & take my chances that it will outlast me. I prefer an organic bovine valve to avoid Coumadin or one of the other blood thinner choices required with a mechanical valve.
What else? I am mostly asymptomatic but out of breath too easily with slight exertion. Also, I have a wonderful 11yo son & a great family and friends. My sister and brother-in-law are here to help with my mom (who lives with me) and our dog Sadie and my son.
