I've known about my heart murmur for a number of years. My doctor has been keeping a watch over me and it recently got to the stage where an ecocardiogram showed that I had a severe stenosis of the aortic valve. It appears to be a congenital defect as my mother, sister and son have all had valve replacements and/or repair. I consider myself lucky to have got to 74 years old before needing this. I am now preparing for surgery sometime in the new year.
