Your journal was very encouraging and was blessed to hear of your successful operation and the continued progress you are making. I only have one fear when I'm told I'll need this operation and it is having the breathing tube in me as I awaken. I can't stand the thought and just want to know how you did with it. Thank your for your beautiful testimony.

Susan Sevier Ruth -- I'm glad you reached out...it is particularly meaningful since today is my birthday, a birthday I am very glad to have (even though it is snowing here). Being a singer, the tube and how I would feel when I awoke with tubes everywhere, etc. was a great fear to me. I won't lie to you -- there were a few issues with the tube when I woke up, mostly because they had trouble intubating me and didn't want to remove it until they were certain they had someone to replace it if need be. But from my viewpoint, despite my fears of that moment, the combination of my gratitude for waking up after the surgery and the post-surgery drugs, with all that the tube and the externals were of little consequence. I was glad to have my eyes open. I was glad my loved ones were there. I was glad I knew who I was. Everything else was a fog -- at that point, I just surrendered to the kindness of the medical professionals who were caring for me. Even with the issues about intubation, it was only a few hours that I was awake and aware of the tube and then it was out. Hopkins is such a wonderful hospital that I was totally unaware of all the other tubes that were still in me at that point.
There is so much worry before the surgery; afterwards, particularly those first few days, there is only sleep and recovery and responding to what you are asked to do...somehow, after the moment when you surrender for the surgical procedure, everything gets much easier. That's the time it is hardest on those around us.
Please let me know when your surgery will happen; I will pray for you and your recovery and for those around you. My best advice -- feel all those fears now; put them aside as you go into surgery, and then pick up the new life awaiting you afterwards with joy and gusto. All my best.

It is not unusual for some irregular heart beating after a surgery like this. My sister is a nurse in a cardiac practice and keeps expecting me to experience this but so far so good. Keep faith and keep walking and pacing yourself, not too fast. I is have been following your progress and hope you get through this bump in the road soon.
