I was never offered a sleep aid, and doubt I would have taken it. Less drugs is better, in my opinion. My wife has taken melatonin with good results, I would consider that one. We have two dogs who sleep on the bed, and they might be part of my problem. Hope you can figure that one out, sleep is too important.

Sure, there were good and bad days, but the bad, at least for me, weren't all that bad. The minor complications I had from surgery weren't all that bad. I'm 7 months past surgery now. I still have a little discomfort with my scar, which is still healing. My rehab is over, and I'm working out on my own, gaining strength. I'm not limited in anything, but I am 57, not 37, so age has slowed me down. With my type of surgery it just took time to get past things. Mine wasn't that bad........if I was to quantify it, or try to, I'd say 20 "good days" for each "not so good day". I'd say that the "not so good days" pretty much vanished after 3 months. I'm not at full strength yet, it's a process, but I'm getting there. I feel good, and when someone asks how I'm feeling I frequently forget I had open heart surgery......and that's a good thing. But in the 2 weeks post op, those were more difficult days than now. And I do still have some sleep issues, I can fall asleep quickly, but wake up after a few hours and then don't sleep very good after that. I took naps for the first 5 months, which helped.

Joseph Segal Thanks for the support. Do you do or take anything for sleeping? I have a terrible time falling asleep and even when I sleep I don't get into a deep sleep. I am sure you were offered sleeping pills but they are usually a form of Benzodiazepines which are addictive and are not worth the bother of dealing with withdrawal symptoms. Than there is Melatonin, which you may find helpful in doses between 3-6mg. Also there are a lot of natural concoctions for sleep aid, which may help you (which can be purchased online), but unfortunately they don't really help me.
Hey,
Yes, I had some surgery back in November. Here's a link to my journal. http://www.heart-valve-surgery.com/journals/user/robwigley
What I had doesn't really compare to what you've been facing, but no matter what, it's a long trip, harder at times than others. Looking back I feel I had a pretty easy time of it, though my wife, Leslie, would disagree. She's probably right, too, because I know some of my memories aren't there, which is a good thing.
