Brian,
I was reading your journal and glad to see you are recovering well and each day gets better. I have Aortic Senosis and am having HVR on 9/8 and stll need to make a decision on a valve. What type of valve did you get and why did you choose that type?

Brian selected a bovine (cow) valve. The benefit of choosing bovine or porcine (pig) is that Coumadin (blood thinner) is not required. With a mechanical valve, you have to be on Coumadin for the rest of your life. We were told the average life of a bovine valve was 15 to 18 years. When/if a new valve is required in the future, there most likely will be an even better approach. Brian had his surgery done at Duke Univ. Hosp. by Dr. Donald Glower. Dr. Glower is an expert at heart valve surgery and doing the minimally invasive (key hole) procedure. We think it's important to go to a surgeon and hospital that has a lot of experience doing this procedure.
