Does Grey’s Anatomy Miss Mark On Heart Surgery Reality?

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Don’t get me wrong.

I really enjoy the television show Grey’s Anatomy (Thursdays, 9pm on ABC).

My wife (Robyn) really loves it. So, we always watch the weekly trials and tribulations of Meredith Grey, McDreamy, McSteamy, George, the Chief, Yang, Izzy and, lately, Dr. Erica Hahn – the head of cardiothoracic surgery at Seattle Grace.

Brooke Smith - Heart Surgeon Dr. Hahn On Gray's Anatomy

That said, the title of this blog may be a little harsh for ABC’s hit series.

But, as a former open heart surgery patient, I’m getting a tad uncomfortable of the dramatic style by which Grey’s Anatomy depicts life in a heart surgery ward.

More Incision Shield Samples Coming!

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

[BLOG UPDATE: ALL INCISION SHIELD SAMPLES ARE NOW GONE! TO ORDER YOUR INCISION SHIELD WITH A SPECIAL DISCOUNT, PLEASE CLICK HERE.]

Good news everybody!

Yesterday, I received a call from the Incision Shield team. I told them how quickly you gobbled up their Incision Shield samples (posted here in an earlier blog).

Guess what?

The owner of Incision Shield is going to send me more free samples to give out to those of you preparing for heart valve repair or heart valve replacement.

If you are interested in receiving a complimentary Incision Shield…

Please send an email to adam@heart-valve-surgery.com with your name and address as soon as possible. I’m not sure how many Incision Shields are coming, so I will send them out on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Oh yah… The Incision Shield is designed for heart surgery patients experiencing broken sternum recovery. So, if you are having robotic valve surgery or minimally invasive surgery, this product will not help protect against scar discomfort. That said, let’s make sure those patients that get samples are having a median sternotomy (aka broken sternum).

You can learn more about the Incision Shield, by clicking this link.

Interviewing Your Potential Heart Surgeon

Monday, January 28th, 2008

As you may be learning or have already learned…

Finding your surgeon is a critical process that requires due diligence and, at times, tenacity. That said, there are many tactics you can use to locate and select the right heart valve surgeon for you.

In my opinion, one key ingredient in the surgeon selection process is the heart surgeon interview. Personally, I interviewed several heart valve surgeons prior to picking Dr. Vaughn Starnes for my aortic valve replacement.

Interviewing Your Potential Heart Surgeon

Recently, I was reading the Wall Street Journal when I came across an interesting article about the challenges of asking surgeons tough questions.

This article was appropriately titled Asking Your Surgeon The Tough Questions. It’s a pretty good article that provides some interesting thoughts and references, so I linked over to it for your review (if you like).

In one part of the article it notes, “To help patients be more pro-active, health-care groups, hospitals and medical specialty societies are offering new resources, including Web sites, books and checklists of questions to ask. The aim is to help patients select qualified surgeons, prepare for operations, and overcome the fear that often inhibits them from asking tough questions.”

The funny part about that quote is that one section of my book focuses on this specific topic – how to interview your potential heart surgeon.

While the article referenced-above is good… There are some critical elements, specific to cardiac surgery, that were lacking.

Anyways, I hope this helps you prepare to interview / ask questions of your heart surgeon.

Your Cardiovascular Disease Treatment – Best Hospitals And Best Surgeon Research

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

I’m not sure about you…

But, as I prepared for my heart valve surgery, one of the many critical questions I wanted to answer was, “Which are the best heart care facilities?” and “Who are the best heart valve surgeons?”

Best Cardiovascular Disease Treatment - Hospitals and Surgeons

I did ALOT of research on the topic of cardiovascular disease treatment – best hospitals and surgeons. (So you know, I consider heart valve disease in the realm of cardiovascular disorders although others may consider the term isolate to arteries and veins.)

That said, a lot of my research ended up in my book. However, I have also placed a number of cardiothoracic surgeon profiles in this blog and within my website. I have posted profiles for each of the following heart surgeons here – Vaughn Starnes (Los Angeles), Paul Stelzer (New York City), Eric Roselli (Cleveland), Gosta Pettersson (Cleveland), Kevin Accola (Florida) and more.

Specific to the best hospitals for cardiovascular disease treatment, here is a link from US News And World Report that has some interesting information about the best hospitals for cardiac care in the United States. They list the top five heart specialty hospitals as:

  1. The Cleveland Clinic (Ohio)
  2. Mayo Clinic (Minnesota)
  3. Brigham and Women’s Hospital (Massachusetts)
  4. John Hopkins Hospital (Maryland)
  5. Massachusetts General Hospital (Massachusetts)

If you have any doctors or hospitals you would like me to profile in this blog, please let me know. You can email me or leave a reply below.

I hope this helps you know a little bit more on the topic of cardiovascular disease treatment – best surgeons and hospitals.
