I had 2 valve replacements, a repair and maze done in July. Afib lasted off and on until about 6 months. Havent had a recurrance of it since that time, (hopefully never again)The video was helpful too, Thanks for showing that. So love this website and have recommended it to others I am on a low dose of medication, lopressor, that keeps the heartrate at a slower pace. Feel much better!

I had a mitral valve repair and double maze procedure three weeks ago. No afib since then. I am on amiodoral for now but will be off that in two weeks. Still in my recovery phase but I am encouraged as the many Meds the had me on where not this effective.
Suggestion: Take some good ear plugs to the hospital. It was the only way I could get any sleep!

Thanks for the book Adam'

I had my tricuspid valve replaced last year along with the MAZE procedure done by Dr Hillel Laks at UCLA Medical Center. I have had 'electrical' issues with my heart since birth and in last few yrs developed Afib. They did the procedure and so far so good it has not gone back, The doctor thought that it could possibly go back w/in 6mos and then my heart would have to be shocked back and believed after that it would be ok. I have not had any issues with the Afib since my surgery-thank God.. hope all goes well for you...

My husband also had the Maze procedure done in late November when he had an aortic valve replaced and mitral valve repaired. We are still waiting to see if the procedure works for him as he is currently still on afib medication but hopes are that he will be able to eventually eliminate it. You can also see a more detailed explanation at:
http://www.pccvs.com/publications/?id=1
Then click on "Atrial Fibrillation and the Maze Operation." There is a file and PowerPoint presentation.

My husband had mitral repair and maze along with a triple bypass Sept. 2008. He was told he would be in and out of afib for 6 to 8 months and then settle down. The first couple months he would have afib then did settle. He every once in a while would be irregular for a day then maybe go 2 weeks normal. So, for him, it did help. Good luck!

I had my mitral valve replacement and Maze procedure in September of 2008 and have not experienced A-fib since. If they are going in for the valve, the Maze is a common and very successful procedure based on my experience as well as others.

My husband had an aaortic valve replacement in October which included the Maze proceedure. He stayed in sinus rhythm for only 4 days and reverted tol A-Fib. Obviously, the Maze will NOT always have the immediate results of eliminating the A-fib. One cardioversion is planned for next month; right now we are dealing with set backs resulting from bleeding on Coumadin.
