April 30th, 2009

Hey everybody,

I’m curious to know…  Do you ever watch the heart valve videos that are posted in the sidebar of this web page?

I have never received any feedback about the value of these videos for patients or caregivers, so I figured I would simply ask.

If you could leave me your thoughts about these heart valve videos, I’d really appreciate it. Please click here to leave a comment.

Absolutely! My husband is waiting to schedule for mitral valve surgery. Unfortunately after his cardiac cath test in February after the procedure was finished he developed two blood clots in his legs. Now we are using blood thinners to disolve before we can proceed with surgery. The waiting has been awful! He is up and down, very frightened which transfers to me. He chooses to know as little as possible – me – I ordered your book as soon as we found out and comb your website for any bits of information that will help me as caretaker. The videos have been so helpful. He is 56 and a normal work day is 16 hours. It will be his motivation to heal quickly to get back to work! I wonder why there is not a program PRIOR to surgery for caretakers? I plan on keeping a journal throughout this ordeal and if time permits to start a volunteer program at our hospital for caretakers about to embark on this journey with helpful hints. With your permission I would like to highly suggest your book which is insightful and honest. I know I have a long road ahead of me with no family support around to help, however, I feel I have somewhat of a better grip on what to expect now because of your information. Thank you for your website and book. P.S. Congratualtions on your beautiful addition to your family!

I like the sidebar showing heart valves working. I had arotic valve replacement on Feb. 12, 2009 and I played golf four weeks later (not very well and did’t swing as hard as I did before) but I did play four times over a two week period. As fast as my recovery started it hasn’t gone as fast the past six weeks.
I read all your blogs and find them interesting. The one I just got about deperission/temper is one I can identfy with.
My surgon Dr. Ralph DamianoJr. head of surgey Barnes Jewish St. Louis was excellent. I got his name off the interent after reading your book and getting a second opinion. John

Dear Adam
I read and watch everything on your web site because I am so eager to know what is happening to me and why. I spent weeks searching the internet before coming across your site and once I did, I ordered the book immediately and am so thankful to have it. As you pointed out, your book isn’t availble here in Canada. Downloading and printing it off was a snap – thank you. The blogs you send to me are ever so welcome. It’s wonderful to read stories from others even though they don’t all have my condition – mitral valve prolapse with severe regurgitation. You are doing such an service to those of us who need and want the information you are able to put forth. I honestly really like to see the videos because they show exactly what is happening rather than just looking at still pictures. I’m seeing my cardiologist and surgeon every few months now for testing and they are just waiting for the “right” time – somewhere before heart failure and doing severe damage to the heart. In the meantime I find a great deal of comfort from reading your blogs and keeping in touch with your site. Thank you for just the best site going. Cheryl Irvine, Ontario, Canada

This was an excellent video which informed me now the valves function in the heart. For the first time, I began to understand………I need two valves replaced but am not rushing toward the procedure. I am walking slowly………I had just received your book and am reading it quickly……….When I do decide it is time to make that appointment with the Surgeon, I will be very informed therefore the conversation will be an “intelligent” one on my part (lol) and I hope to get the right answers so I can set the date. Thank you, Adam for the book you have written for I know many of my questions will be answered from your book.

Yes, I watched the sidebar of (I guess) Barbara Bush’s surgeon talking about valve repair vs. replacement. I thought it was a well done clip.
Thanks.

Dear Adam:

The heart valves video was amazing!! It’s scary when I think that replacing those valves with either tissue or mechanical valves may not do as well. I’m preparing for double (aorta and mitral) valve replacement surgery soon, and I’m reading your book. Your book is very informative and comforting. I cannot imagine facing this surgery without your book! I have to remember that the valves that need replaced do not look like or work like the healthy valves in the video! Then it is easier to accept. That is an amazing video though. Thanks for that!

Yes Adam – there is an audience! Like the others who commented before me I read and view everything on your website with enthusiasm. We are all hungry for knowledge in order to understand what is happening to us, or our loved one, and how to cope with it. I particullary liked the video of Dr Guardelli (not sure if I spelt that right) where he explained how the heart functioned and what happens during surgery. From there I was able to go to other links on valve replacement – A real education.
I just had my cardiac cath done 2 days ago and have an appointment with the surgeon on Wednesday and I will move forward to replace my valve and look forward to a healthier life.

Yes I do appreciate the videos that you present for us. When I talk to friends who know someone in need of heart surgery I always recommend your web site and book. I tell them about the videos and how they will not feel like they are alone in there hour of need, but in fact they are apart of a large community.
I am now 5 months out and next week I will be watching my oldest daughter graduate from USC with a Dental Hygiene degree.

Thanks for all your good work Adam,

Ted
