Heart Valve Scam, Cardiologist Goes To Jail

March 4th, 2009

I place this story in the “absolutely disgusting” file. As you can read below, this is one more reason you really want to research your medical team as-much-as-possible before any type of heart valve surgery.

Thaindian.com just reported that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in India sentenced a leading cardiologist to five years in jail – for using substandard heart valve transplants during surgery.

R.S. Dhaliwal, former head of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery department at of the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), was convicted along with a chemist for what is known as “heart valve scam”.

The scam? Dhaliwal charged patients for premium valves even though the cardiologist was implanting substandard valve replacements. The prosecution told the court that Dhaliwal referred patients and PGIMER officials to  chemists who sold low-priced valves and accessories but charged higher rates. The unscrupulous profit was shared between Dhaliwal and the chemists.

According to medical records, 324 surgeries were done by Dhaliwal during 1994-2001. In total, the investigating agency found discrepancies in 38 surgeries.

Well this occurred in India, so no reason to fear!?

Except for the trend of medical tourism, where patients travel overseas for surgery to arbitrage the price differential with presumably US level quality and care levels (or higher.)

Hi Jerry,

Even though this heart valve scam occurred in India, I wanted to make sure everyone is aware of this.

Like you pointed out, some patients are going the “medical tourism route” to places like India for valve surgery.

If anyone is interested here is a video about Robin, a mitral valve repair patient who had heart valve surgery in India.

Keep on tickin!

I was missed diagnoised by 3 different cardiologists, 2 in Southern California and 1 in Nevada. I was told to see a psychriatrist that I fained and complained of dizziness for attention. The cardiologisdts recognized that I had a bi-cuspid aortic valve. I was told not to worry that it was working well. I knew diferently. I am in the medical field. I made an appointment with a cardiac surgeon, who also teaches at Nevada’ medical school. He admitted me to the hospital as an emergency due to having fainted and falling the nioght before leaving me with a black and blue face where I hit a piece of furniture in my fall. After surgery, my primary surgeon and his assistant surgeon said my valve would had failed and I could have died in 3 months without a new valve. iF YOU ARE NOT BEING LISTENED TO BY YOUR DOCTOR ORDO NOT HAVE YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED, DO SOME RESEARCH. I contact via email Cleveland Clinic. They told me my problem was physical not psychological. DON’T GIVE UP KEEP SEARCHING FOR THE RIGHT ANSWER.
I do have one question, that my doctors can not answer and tell me they do not have an answer. I am exhaused and can sleep without eating for 2-3 days. I felt wonderful post surgery, but 3 years later I am too tir4ed to do anything. It may not even be my heart, since I have had every test in the books.
Good luck keep on getting better and staying that way.
Jacquie

well i am an indian… a doctor by profession… i have the privilege of knowing Dr. Dhaliwal.. He is Double DNB as well as M.S and M.ch in in cardiac as well as General surgery.. he is a record holder of 99% in ecfmg which still holds after 25 odd years.. he has trained more than 200 cardiac surgeons under him and has more than 150 original publications under his name.. he has invented 9 original techiniques patented by him and is a revered name in cardiothoracic surgery nationally and internationnally…he is a victim of circumstances and i can vouch for his honesty.. he was framed by various subordinates of his as he was getting operations done in minimum charges which matters a lot in developing country like India and was a sore thumb for the major private corporate hospitals who were staring at empty opds.. due to the draconian indian legal system and mass corruption in indian judicial system.. he is suffering this fate.. may god make him strong
