CNN Video: Rene’s Robotic Valve Surgery

Since announcing the upcoming webcast about robotic surgery from The Cleveland Clinic [1], my inbox has been flooded with questions about the minimally invasive, Da Vinci Robot.
To help you learn more about the Da Vinci robot, I located an interesting, patient video about Rene Lepage from CNN that highlights the technology and the benefits of robotic surgery for mitral valve repair [2]- for disorders including mitral valve regurgitation [3]. Also… one of the questions I keep getting about robotic surgery is, “Will my heart stop during robotic surgery?”
The answer to that question is… yes. Similar to a traditional open heart surgery in which the sternum is split [4], the patient’s heart will be stopped and then restarted during the operation. To learn more about how your heart is stopped and started, click the following links:
