From experience, I know there is nothing better than having 100% faith in your heart surgeon when you roll into the operating room for your heart valve replacement or heart valve repair.

For that reason, I am continuing to extend my [1] top heart surgeon category in this blog. I am hopeful these surgeon profiles will help future patients and their caregivers find highly regarded surgeons in the heart valve community.

Dr. David Adams from Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, New York is one such surgeon that should be highlighted. That said, I really appreciate the approach Dr. David Adams has taken to really help his patients understand heart valve surgery. While at his site, I listened to a lecture about the rising debate of heart valve repair versus heart valve replacement. It was very, very interesting.

Background: Dr. David H. Adams, the Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Professor and Chairman, received his undergraduate and medical education at Duke University. He completed his internship and residency in general and cardiothoracic surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, followed by a fellowship in the Cardiothoracic Unit at Harefield Hospital in London under [3] Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub.

In addition, he took time away from his clinical training to complete a two-year research fellowship under Professor Morris Karnovsky in the Department of Pathology at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Adams joined the faculty at Mount Sinai in January 2002 after a nine-year tenure on the cardiac surgery faculty at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Adams’ clinical interests includes all aspects of cardiac valve surgery, with a special emphasis on mitral valve reconstruction, as well as the surgical therapy of heart failure. He has lectured extensively around the world on the topic of mitral valve repair surgery and has received numerous awards, including Honorary Professor of Surgery, Capital University of Medical Sciences in Beijing.

Dr. Adams has authored over 200 publications, holds two patents, and is recognized as a leading surgeon scientist and medical expert, serving on the Editorial Boards of several prominent journals including the Annals of Thoracic Surgery. He has also served in an advisory capacity to industry leaders in cardiovascular surgery, including Edwards Lifesciences, Carbomedics, Guidant, Medtronic, 3F, Ventrica, and St. Jude Medical. He is the co-inventor of the Carpentier-McCarthy-Adams IMR ETlogix Annuloplasty Ring manufactured by Edwards Lifesciences.

Dr. David Adams’ major research interests include the investigation of ischemic mitral regurgitation, outcomes related to mitral valve repair, and novel mitral valve repair strategies. Past research honors include the Alton Ochsner Research Scholarship from the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and the Paul Dudley White Research Fellowship from the American Heart Association.
