From experience, I know there is nothing better than having 100% faith in your heart surgeon when you roll into the operating room for your heart valve replacement or heart valve repair.
For that reason, I am continuing to extend my top heart surgeon category in this blog. I am hopeful these surgeon profiles will help future patients and their caregivers find highly regarded surgeons in the heart valve community.
Dr. David Adams from Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, New York is one such surgeon that should be highlighted. In addition to hearing positive reports from his patients, I also spent a good amount of time learning about Dr. David Adams on his website, the Mitral Valve Repair Center. That said, I really appreciate the approach Dr. David Adams has taken to really help his patients understand heart valve surgery. While at his site, I listened to a lecture about the rising debate of heart valve repair versus heart valve replacement. It was very, very interesting.

Background: Dr. David H. Adams, the Marie-Josée and Henry R. Kravis Professor and Chairman, received his undergraduate and medical education at Duke University. He completed his internship and residency in general and cardiothoracic surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, followed by a fellowship in the Cardiothoracic Unit at Harefield Hospital in London under Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub.
In addition, he took time away from his clinical training to complete a two-year research fellowship under Professor Morris Karnovsky in the Department of Pathology at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Adams joined the faculty at Mount Sinai in January 2002 after a nine-year tenure on the cardiac surgery faculty at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Dr. Adams’ clinical interests includes all aspects of cardiac valve surgery, with a special emphasis on mitral valve reconstruction, as well as the surgical therapy of heart failure. He has lectured extensively around the world on the topic of mitral valve repair surgery and has received numerous awards, including Honorary Professor of Surgery, Capital University of Medical Sciences in Beijing.
Dr. Adams has authored over 200 publications, holds two patents, and is recognized as a leading surgeon scientist and medical expert, serving on the Editorial Boards of several prominent journals including the Annals of Thoracic Surgery. He has also served in an advisory capacity to industry leaders in cardiovascular surgery, including Edwards Lifesciences, Carbomedics, Guidant, Medtronic, 3F, Ventrica, and St. Jude Medical. He is the co-inventor of the Carpentier-McCarthy-Adams IMR ETlogix Annuloplasty Ring manufactured by Edwards Lifesciences.
Dr. David Adams’ major research interests include the investigation of ischemic mitral regurgitation, outcomes related to mitral valve repair, and novel mitral valve repair strategies. Past research honors include the Alton Ochsner Research Scholarship from the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and the Paul Dudley White Research Fellowship from the American Heart Association.

Hi Adam,
Enjoyed reading about Dr. Adams. I have read a lot about him.
Also have been in touch with a great guy, Mike Hanuschik, who is product manager for da Vinci robot. He has been very kind and got in touch with me because of a web site we are both interested in, and turned out he is knowledgeable about the robot, and I am exploring mitral valve repair surgery!
I go to UCLA tomorrow to have a consult with Dr. Richard Shemin. I will let you know how that goes. My Monday echocardiogram came back good as far as mitral valve - it remains moderate to severe, has not changed since 6 months ago - but other small changes (still small) make me think that it may be time to move toward this surgery and save my heart muscle from congestive heart failure.
It’s a touch decision when you are not particularly symptomatic (I have palpitations and have to take beta blockers, had a run of persistent afib 2 years ago but it was cardioverted and has remained okay) … and the mitral valve repair surgery is a big decision.

Just wondering for your email adress.
I have a son with dilated cardiomyopathy and has a mitral valve leak.
Kirsten Finucane is the Heart surgeon in NZ and is very reluclant to do the operation. Im wondering from your point of view the risks, and whether or not somebody like you could do the procedure with confident of success.

I am due for surgery with Dr Adams next month for a valve sparing and repair of an aortic aneurysm. My wife and I met with Dr Adam’s a few weeks ago. I had a million questions and a lot of concern before I went to his office. He did such an amazing job of explaining my problems and the procedures that would be used to fix them. He and his staff are true professionals.

Dr. Adams performed a mitral valve repair on me in April 2005. He spent a lot of time with me and my wife during our consult, after my cardiologist referred me to him. He even brought us up to the echo lab to do another echo (in addition to the one my cardiologist sent with me on DVD) to get a better look. So, at 6 pm, Dr. Adams brought me and my wife up to have an echo on the fly. I don’t know that many doctors/places would do that.
