Gosta Pettersson, MD – Heart Surgeon, The Cleveland Clinic, Ohio

September 17th, 2007

From February through April of this year, I ran an extensive survey to better understand the realities of heart valve surgery for patients and their caregivers.

Some of the questions posed to the 78 former, heart valve surgery patients were about their cardiothoracic surgeons. The responses to all of these questions were very interesting and are now published in the revised edition of The Patient’s Guide To Heart Valve Surgery.

As I reviewed the survey results, a few select heart surgeons received high marks and comments from their heart valve surgery patients. One of those “top cardiothoracic surgeons” was Dr. Gosta Pettersson, MD from Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Gosta Pettersson practices at The Cleveland Clinic.

I recently exchanged emails with Dr. Pettersson and learned that he is also an author. Gosta Pettersson wrote two books titled “My Heart Needs Repair” and “You Have Touched My Heart”.

I had my first aortic valve replacement at age 26. The second one at age 36 nearly killed me. Many doctors told me that a third one would be very dangerous, even perhaps a 50:50 proposition.

So, I did my research and headed for the Cleveland Clinic at age 56. My cardiologist there told me that it was worth waiting for an opening in Dr. Gosta Petterson’s busy schedule. Three weeks later, he performed his magic on me. Since then, two cardiologists in Colorado have assured me that the work he did on my heart is mind-boggling.

I’m very grateful for his skills, but also his compassion and dedication.

Thanks for sharing that, Stephen. I am hoping for the same type of miracle. I had my first aortic valve replacement done in PA last year, after which I was in heart block and needed a permanent pacemaker implanted. Only two months after the surgery a paravalvular leak was discovered which is now causing problems with my heart’s overall function. My cardiologist has informed me that I need to have another open heart surgery asap, and I am holding out for Dr. Petterson. I feel that he is the one who can help me. Although I have yet to get complete insurance approval, I am battling everyday to make sure that Dr. Pettersson becomes my surgeon. I am praying as well. Thank you so much for giving me even more initiative to get there.
