Mountain Climbing Everest After Heart Valve Replacement?
Blog Topics: Veronika Meyer, Heart Valve Replacement Patient, Featured In Newsweek Online; St. Jude Medical Mechanical Heart Valve Replacements; Patient Success Story
If there is one thing I know about heart valve surgery patients, they thrive following heart surgery.
Yes. There is fear going through the process.
Yes. There is pain.
Yes. There are typically tears during recovery.
However, in all of my research and patient interviews, there is ALSO a love for life in most heart valve surgery patients knowing they have a “Second Chance” at life. As I have written before, my recent 2007 online survery of 78 patients illustrates how heart valve surgery patients turn lemon into lemonade.
One of my personal heroes is Veronika Meyer, the mountain climber extraordinaire. I was so inspired by her patient success story that I wrote and feature a story on Veronika in my book.

Anyway, I just learned from Amy Ellis at St. Jude Medical that Veronika Meyer was featured in Newsweek Online just a few days ago.
With that said, I had to post this story for you to read.
To learn more about the patient perspective on heart valve surgery, from diagnosis through recovery, you may want to read my book, The Patient’s Guide To Heart Valve Surgery. This unique book was designed to help both patients and caregivers better understand the challenges and opportunities of heart valve surgery. Click here to learn more.

Adam,
Thanks for visiting my blog. Interesting site you have going here. I might point my mom to it (she’s the one with the heart valve) to see what she thinks.

Hi,
I just discovered this site. I have no experience in writing on a blog. I googled “coumadin blogs” because I am interested in getting feedback from other aortic Valve (mechanical) replacemnt patients. I had my surgery 20 years ago and have been on coumadin for all that time. I am 64 yrs. of age. I hate being on coumadin. I would love to be able to go an alternative root if that is at all possible. Whenever I try to bring this up with my physician she looks at me like I am out of my mind. I don’t understand why I just couldn’t eat anti-clotting foods that have Vitamin K in them. What is your opinion about this? Are there others who would love to go this route?
