I distinctly remember what it is like to be diagnosed with a severe heart valve defect. The realization that heart valve surgery is in your future can bring about a number of unique emotions - most of all fear of the unknown.

For many, there are a number of surgical options to consider post-diagnosis. If you need a valve replacement, the question becomes one of preference. Will you receive a mechanical valve? A tissue valve replacement? Maybe a pig valve? Or, a bovine valve replacement.

One of the leading valve replacement manufacturers is Edwards Lifesciences from Irvine, California. Edwards valve replacements have been used for years in heart valve replacement surgery.

Edwards valve replacements cover many different heart valve needs including the aortic valve and the mitral valve. As you can see below, Edwards valves are primarily tissue valves comprised of porcine tissue.

It should also be noted the Edwards LifeSciences is also pioneering the use of transcatheter valve replacement procedures. I have also included a picture of a transcatheter Edwards valve below.

Along with Medtronic, St. Jude, On-X and ATS, Edwards valves replacements are the most well-known and well-regarded heart valve replacement manufacturers in the industry.

I hope this helps explain a little more about Edwards valves replacements and heart valve surgery.

Keep on tickin!
