If you are preparing for heart bypass surgery, I am pretty sure that you will become familiar with the device below during your time in the intensive care unit. This breathing apparatus is known as an incentive spirometer.
I just received an email asking me if I had an image of spirometer. Luckily, I do. In fact, I have a picture of me blowing on an incentive spirometer in the intensive care unit.


Given my heavy use of the incentive spirometer during my time in and outside of the hospital, I thought some of you may want to know what an incentive spirometer is.

As for your patient education on using an incentive spirometer, I would encourage you to discuss this with your surgeon or ICU nurse during your time in the hospital. The incentive spirometer can be very, very helpful for cardiorespiratory issues.
